VAG-COM does not work on Pocket PC's at the present time.
We have no near-term plans to make a Pocket-PC version.

That said it's is very possible... ;)

Surely it works on the ones with windows on them ?

Windows Mobile (i.e. the pocket PC OS) isn't the same as windows xp (for example) but they do share a lot of commonality (i.e. the Mobile API is basically a paired down version of full blown windows). Seeing as VAG-COM is essentially doing some low-speed serial control it wouldn't be that hard to port it to Windows Mobile. In fact, it'd probably take the longest just to port (or re-write) the UI for it to fit the much small screen.
Get the impression that the perception is that there isn't a market for such a product - personally i disagree as i would certainly buy it for mine.. Plus of course the number of Windows Mobile and Windows Mobile Phone Edition devices is growing rapidly.
Right guys the software is avalible on line and is FREE :p
Its call Vag Check (http://www.arlab.it/home.html) all you have to do is build a cable and there you have it free Vag Com ;)
Will have mine working this weekend so i will report back

Top job - saw this a while back and was put off by making the cable
Cable's is really easy once you have the diagrame off the site, but the easyist way is to get your mate to do it like me

VAG-Check is not VAG-COM!
You might ask yourself why VAG-Check is free. I believe the answer is because the product has so many bugs and compatibility issues that the author feels he can't sell it.
From the site:
"Advanced features are enabled only for registered users.
The 'Registration' form allows to insert registration key that
enable all advanced features. Currently it is not possible
register the program, because author has not still decided
which will be the future developments"

Easy there :) We're not claiming it's a competitor to VAG-COM (which is very good btw! :worship: ) but it does have *some* of the functionality and runs on a PPC (which is much easier to lug around than a laptop).
Does it really have lots of bugs/compatibility issues tho? I guess Miridor will give us an opinion soon :)
Wish i had the time to write one myself - but it's the last thing i want to do after a days work :thumbd:

Well, look at the text I quoted above. Specifically, Miridor said:

My point is that this program is NOT the equivalent of VAG-COM. VAG-COM has 4 years of development behind it and thousands of users world-wide. Among them over 500 dealer technicians and all 40-some of Volkswagen of America's regional technical specialists. VAG-COM works on all the latest cars including the Touareg, Phaeton, T5, and as of this week, all of the Golf-5 platform cars with the new HEX-USB+CAN interface:

Try that with VAG-Check and see how far you get..:-)

So when are you doing a Windows Mobile version ? :hide:
Seriously tho, i would love a version i could run on a small device - in the same way i use my XDA for sat nav in-car (and as a phone etc). Windows Mobile devices are appearing a-plenty now (seen the MPx from motorola yet?) and given their portability and cheaper price(as compared to a laptop) it makes a lot of sense. Assuming low-baud rate (going on my own experience with working with CAN bus control) these devices *are* capable...
Hey, i can only ask

So when are you doing a Windows Mobile version ?
When I have nothing better to do with my time. That may be a while. Say what you will, but everyone has a PC. Windows CE or Pocket PC or Mobile or whatever you want to call it remains a niche platform. VAG-COM is a niche product. Porting a niche product to a niche platform is a sure way to go broke, something I'd rather not do..:-)
In addition, Windows CE or Pocket PC or Mobile or whatever you want to call it is not yet a stable platform as far as the APIs go. MS still changing too much stuff with every release, and then there's the hassle of all the different binaries one would need to build for the various processors that are used in these devices. Lastly, Palm OS still has a bigger market share. One of these days, the PDA market will become more standardized and then we'll consider it.
In the meanwhile if you want a small cheap platform for VAG-COM, a Toshiba Libretto runs VAG-COM fine. It's a real PC about the size of a VHS casette tape, available used on eBay (in the US anyway) for $100-200. Sony Picturebooks are pretty cool too, but more expensive.
-Uwe-
PS: VW runs its diagnositic CAN bus at 500 kbps.

:D Fair comments :) M$ seem to have settled on Windows Mobile (with the post fix of 'phone edition' for phone enabled devices) for the time being. I didn't honestly expect you to say 'yes we're working on it now' - moreover it's something for the future (with the convergence of PDA/phone devices the market is expanding..). But hey, wouldn't it be so cool? :)
Building for CE/PPC/Mobile isn't so bad thesedays - and certainly porting to it would be a heck of a lot easier than Palm (at least the APIs share commonality). Then again TomTom (bless em) support both platforms [B)] I've been messing around with CE for a while (usually doing .NET/MFC/C++ work for WinXP) and don't find it too bad. Most of the work is taking into account the much smaller screen size and UI layout. Still, if i were you, i wouldn't do it either - it is (as you rightly point out) a niche market...
500kbps? Hmmm... we're still running ours at 9600baud via RS232 ;)
Woo calm it there fella!
Poor wording I apologize, all I'm interested in at the mo is a having a fully mobile platform with my Nav...
In its current form VAG-COM can't offer that but VAG-Check can!
I will site an unbiased opinion soon.
Regards James
