View Full Version : Full power = flat/surge spot?
Guys, I had the oportunity to open mine out last night, (Private airfield...) when I hit 120 (Indicated speed) she felt fine. However pushed it a tad more, and it felt a tad strange, like a sponge was soaked full couldnt get any more then it could then it couldnt, butterfly hit miss hit miss kinda of feeling, but not rough or eratic, smooth.. Ease off a tad, fine, hit it hard again no worries, but try & hold it seesaw feeling
This make sence...... I can feel this at lower rev's to but not like this, I usualy just push through it...
MAF? Fuel filter? I'm due my 50k sooooooon (Doing it myself....)
Oh and one other point, break hard & the wosh noise that I can hear now I have a different bumper on
sounds a little like the sort of stutter i used to have, that was a dodgy N18 EGR Control valve, but i guess it could be one of many things, if you could do some logging with vag com you might be able to pin point where the problem is i guess, but at the mo it could be MAF, N18, N75 or even fuel filter like you say....
Mmmm Maf newish... Will do some Vag Com checking at lunch.,... Cheers
But I reckon its a posible dirty fuel filter....
That sort of sounds like a MAF, but I've seen a few cars with a clogged fuel filter doing something similar (espcially if there's alot of water deposited in it).

ECK water in fuel filter?>!
If it is the MAF then I will look into the Merc option..... (Anyone got the correct info b4 I go the the nearest Merc dealer...)

If the MAF is newish then it's probably the fuel filter. Water, yes!! You'd be surprised how much gets in there.

ECK water in fuel filter
Quite normal for diesels; often a part of the service is to drain water from the fuel filter.
My Rover 220 SDI had a little tap on the bottom of the fuel filter for this very purpose.
Right thats it - Fuel filter check clean change...... Errr were do I start>!<

Most have a plastic plug on the bottom to drain water out. Afterwards, switch ignition on/off 3-4 times to fill the filter with fresh diesel from tank.
Should be ready to go after that.
Oooooooo guess I'm playing at lunchtime.// Cheers Paulo..

that's for water, if the filter is plain dirty then it's time to change it.

Stu, what you've said reminds me of what my old Volvo T4 used to do when flat out.
If I kept the throttle on the floor at high speed (110+ mph) for more than a couple of seconds it would start to feel like the power was tapering ... it wouldn't lose speed exactly, just feel like it was being gently held back.
However, you could hold a 120mph cruise at two-thirds throttle all day and it would still accelerate if you gave it a little extra.
I spoke to a Volvo tech about it, he said it was because full throttle for more than a couple of seconds at high speed & high rpm was giving the engine more fuel than it could use, so the ECU would lean off the mixture and modulate the turbo boost to keep the exhaust gases within limits and avoid overheating the cat.
At less than full throttle the ECU has more options and "headroom" to play with, because the fuelling is still under full closed-loop control.
Well, it made sense at the time :)
I thought it Looked dirty - left it, will change it.... Better to just get a new one last one changed at 20K thats 30k of usage. . . . Yeah My kinda usage..
