Hi all :)

I've started looking at Leon as a possible contender for my next car. I'm interested in the Cupra R (225). However, it appears that for a little less money I could get a lower powered Leon and have it chipped to more than 225bhp?

I guess I'm a bit confused and would like to know what the most gains can be got from a chip/re-map and which version of Leon is the best platform to start with.

Oh hell it's that question again...

Right well here's a summary:

LCR has uprated suspension, twin intercoolers (required as it runs higher boost = more heat), and better brakes over the LC (aside from the increased power). Chipping a LCR will result in around 270-280odd bhp. Total cost (excluding recaros [note that stock LCR seats have no lumbar support if you've got a bad back] or sat nav) is nearing 19k. Discounts are unlikely due to 'restriction' of numbers of them - dealers seem to charge pretty much what they like and get away with it round here. Running costs: Insurance group 17, MPG usually lower than than LC (going by polls on here), tyres are 18"s so will cost a little more to replace (maybe 30-40quid a corner). Brake pads are enourmously expensive from dealers, but can be worked around by using Ibiza brembo pads.

LC is cheaper, but can have leather, armrest, winter pack, autodimming rear view as options whereas LCR can't (no idea why). Chipping a LC will result in around 230bhp+ (i got 240 from mine but av. on new cars seems to be around 230 mark). Total cost (excluding options) nearing 16.5k (although discounts can be had on a LC so i'd suspect you could knock that under 16k). Running Costs: Insurance Group 16, MPG upto (when driving like nanny) 38 but more usually 33 or so (for me), tyres are 17"s so cost less to replace.

Both cars have good alloys on them which are easy to maintain.
Both cars have the same rolling radius, but the LCR has a smaller profile (hence 18"s on the rims).

LCR will handle better and have more power as stock, LC can be modified to negate this tho (600quid inc fitting for shocks/springs) and, as you say, chipped so it's quicker than a STOCK LCR [i have to be careful here as LCR folk are a sensitive bunch]. I did my suspension + chip + boost controller for 1200quid all inc. Better brake pads (~50quid) will sort the brakes out well enough to handle the extra power.

Frankly, both models of the Leon look great go like stink and are loads of fun whilst being incredibly practical. You can't go wrong either way - it just depends on what you want from a car and how much you want to pay for it.

Are you looking to buy new?, seondhand?, how much do you have to sepnd?.

I suppose the simple answer is this

Leon Cupra 180bhp standard up to 220bhp approx modified
Leon Cupra R 210 or 225bhp standard up to 270bhp modified

And remember Bhp isn't everything Torque is more relative in everday driving situations IMHO.

Do some homework on here using the search facility (get yourself a comfy seat and a large mug of tea before you start you could be a while ;) )and decide whether you want to go to Revo, AmD, Apr or Jabba all come highly recommended.

Take some time to trawl through these RR day results, interesting results for standard cars and different modifiers.................No you can't have ibizacupra's car ;)

Cheers chaps. I'm not used to a functioning Search button as it nevers works on my ezBoard based forums. :( So soz for asking a 'typical' question.

Looking to perhaps buy newish (6m - 1yr old) Bit dissapointed that leather is not an option on the R, as I have it in my Coupe and love it

Also, may be worth looking at the Leon Cupra TDI mate - its not much slower than the 20VT (if at all once its rolling) and once chipped can be putting out near the same BHP and silly (ie 300+ lb/ft of torque). You obviously then get the added extra of doing in the region of 20 MPG more too. Deffo worth having a look at mate IMO ;)

True, that is also something I am considering.

BTW, are there any female Seat tuners on here?

If you mean female SCN members we have a few female members Jill, Keebosioux (sp?), Hippychick, Linz all spring to mind although there are probably a few dozen in total

Put a 'hello' in the General off topic section and see what response you get......and avoid Mark Sheerin :roflmao:
