Im seriously thinking of getting my 130TDi remapped. However the car has only done 4K and im worried about the reliability of the remaps, and the effect they have on the engine/drivetrain(especially the clutch) in the long term as this car will be used to cover long distances. What are peoples views on the reliability of remapped TDi's and do you think that the remap will unlock more power if the engine is a bit more run in.. say after the 10k service?

Cheers

I got mine done at 3,500 miles and have now done 10,700. I'm pretty sure it is now putting out more than my figures say as it is now fully run in and does feel quicker. :D Will be getting it on the rollers again very soon to see what it is now putting out.

Reliability wise, I have had no problems with mine at all. The only problems I have comes from the uncontrollable laughter when you smoke some expensive machinery! :roflmao:

yep i dont know of anyone with a tuned motor who have had problems with it over longer distances, Paulo, (prc) on here has done high miles on his revo tuned tolly and its been fine as far as i know.

There should be no worries at all about getting it done, and sure at 10k would be a good point to do it as the engine would be getting nicely loosened up but cant really see there being a problem doing it at 3500 miles, will just get better as the miles get put on.

with regards to the wear on the drive train, it might well be a bit higher if you drive more aggresivly due to the extra power but if u drive as you always do it should be fine. Yes the clutches are known to slip with the extra torque of the remap but an upgrade to a sachs sports clutch should solve this and really should be factored into an engine upgrade to cope with the power.

The brakes are fairly good on the Mk4 but a few people have upgraded them to cope with the extra power (cpufreak) put some nice big brembos on, but these can be considered an extra upgrade later if needed as the standard brakes are reasonable, you will just have to see what you think, and it totally depends on how you drive.

Go on... get out there get it chipped and then get some miles on it!

Just as Stew mentioned I've covered over 110000km with the Revo code in without a problem (176000km+ total @ the moment) . The clutch does tend to slip, but not much..Sach sport engineering has an uprated clutch available, but I'll only get it in when it really starts slipping.
I usually tel people to wait 5000km before remapping..So your ready for it.. :D

How early the clutch starts slipping, I think would depend on how you drive a bit, as paulo has done over 100,000km in his Revo'd Toledo, without (as I understand) too bad clutch slip, where as others are reporting severe clutch slip after ~20k miles...

10k total on my beastie and no problems so far. We remapped mine at 2k and the hybrid etc went on at 7k, still hunky and to quote a fellow Fabia driver "smoking some expensive machinery!"

Had my Leon 110TDI remapped by Upsolute at 10K miles. Now coming up for 55K with absolutely no issues to date. :)

I'd say the VAG TDI's are still loosening up as they approach 20K. I'd read this on TDIClub, and it certainly seems to be the case with mine.....

The two-piece flywheels in these cars are obviously tuned to the engine in std tune. When you pump up the torque levels, they can oscillate far more than Mr VAG (esq) planned them to at harmonic frequencies. In the 110 engine this is around 2000rpm. I had no judder initially when I was remapped, but increasingly annoying judder as the engine went through 15K miles and towards 20K miles. Eventually it got to a point where I was getting p1ssed off, so I spoke to the boys @ upsolute ~ sent me a new map with boost pegged back a smidge at 2000rpm. Judder gone. No further charge. Happy mik.

Might have to consider the Hybrid myself sometime.

The best smoking session so far...........................Porsche Boxster. :bleh: Don't think he enjoyed that too much!

Most Tuning companies could give you a lower torque program, or if you go for a tuning box then you could slacken it off yourself to go for slightly tamer performance, so as you don't have thumping great amounts of torque being produced at 2000rpm but still a significant improvement on standard if you're really worried about long term problems.
I've modified two TDIs now with no problems at all to report with them.
Give your clutch and turbo an easier life by smoothly accelerating rather than jabbing the accelerator pedal down as turbo diesels respond better this way.

Personally, I think most clutches die an early death because people tendo to nail the accelerator below 2000rpm. I tend to accel smoothly until I'm above 2000rpm.
As mentioned I've done over 110000km with the Revo code in 178000km total and I don't have many problems with the clutch yet.

That doesnt seem like a bad idea. I like the idea of Revo or Jabba... just making the decision I suppose... Jabba did say that it would have a slightly greater increase in power if I left the engine for a few more K... say remap it at 10.. Dunno if I can wait though!! :D
