View Full Version : Cheaper alternative?

I've been using Millers 5W40 CFS for a while now but would like to move to a cheaper alternative as £55 every oil change is fairly high.

What oil would you recommend? It will be strictly road use only but still want a good quality, high performance oil for a modified 350bhp engine.

Gulf competition at £35 is my first thought, but there are also these oils too:

Fuchs Titan Supersyn - £22.74
Shell Helix Ultra - £29.87
Fuchs Titan Race Pro S - £39.78
Castrol Edge - £40.12
Mobil Super 3000 XI - £35.10

TOTAL Quartz 9000 any good? I'm sure you are aware but 5L of Millers 5W40 CFS oil can be had for under £50 including postage off ebay?

I'd go for the Gulf, the others aren't bad at all, but the Gulf is top end, very similar to the CFS.

On their spec sheets all the above oils seem very similar, so what separates them other than price?

Yes, the spec sheets may say similar things, but that doesn't give any information about the base stock quality of the oil.

I didn't notice you put the Pro S on the list, that's equal to the Gulf and not a bad price for what it is at the moment. The Gulf and Pro S are both ester based oils, so the top quality option available. Castrol Edge is PAO synthetic, so a genuine, lab made synthetic oil, but not as good as ester. The others are hydrocracked mineral oils, so a step below the genuine synthetics

I didn't realise the CFS 5w-40 was so cheap on Ebay, only saw the 10w-60 at that price, but we're not too concerned about ebay prices as it's different to what we offer. Private sellers are often less reputable than commercial sellers. I know of someone that changes oil every 1000 miles or so, so it's still nice and clean when it comes out. He then reseals the oil and sells it on Ebay. In the past there were a lot of problems of people selling fake oil, just cheap stuff in expensive cans. Another thing is what happens if something goes wrong, due to the oil, and the retailer isn't an authorised seller. As an example, we sold some ATF to a BMW owner, based on Fuchs recommendation. There was an error in their data for that car and there was about £2500-3000 of repairs needed. Not good, but Fuchs paid the lot. If someone on Ebay recommends the wrong thing, I think the best you'll get is your money back via a paypal claim.

Cheers

I use the Gulf Competition Rob and its good stuff. I bought on offer from OPIE for less than £30 all in. Keep an eye out for the offers. I used 5-40 also.

Sounds like I'll go for the Gulf Competition next time then, £20 cheaper than Millers for 5L. Thanks for all the advice. :D
