View Full Version : 2.0 8v sport
Any one have any experience of these in the Mk4?
Seems to be touted as the petrol alternative to the more popular TDi 130 (has the same spec (apart from the 6 speed g'box)
Would this be the same engine as was found in the MK3 golf (GTi?).
Have been hunting around for a test drive, but it seems to be a very rare beast indeed!
Let me know your thoughts all advice welcome ;)

Hi there,
I've had one of these since last year and I must say that it's been a bit of a disappointment; It looks great, etc, but the interior is no different (sport seats aside) from a regular Ibiza (there's no perception of better quality).
The suspension is hard - ok, it's a sport, but it actually understeers a bit.
However, my 2 biggest gripes with the car have been;
1) Petrol consumption - it PUNISHES town driving and this 2 litre is a thirsty beast.
2) Steering - the electric assisted steering is very unsettling at times and when breaking hard seems totally disconnected from the road - to the point that for a split second, you don't feel in control at all.
Positives; it has plenty of grunt in the mid range and on the motorway, but you just can't take your eyes of that damn petrol needle.... :D
It is the same engine used in the Golf, so maybe it takes time to settle in  , but I can't recommend it - Lord knows why they replaced the 1.4 Sport with this?? The 1.8 FR looks a better bet, and early reports suggest it has ok petrol consumption.
Thanks for the reply! :)
I had wondered about the fuel consumption on these engines - whatever happened to the 1.6 engine variant for the MK4 eh?!
Interesting point about the steering tho' as I had not realised it was electro-assisted.
Ta for the heads up

My wife has the old 8v 2.oltr engine in her 'old' beezer cupra sport and its a really nice engine which gives excellent fuel consumption..nudging 40mpg all the time..
Of course she doesn't rag it like I would but its still impressive.
So where did they go wrong with the so called improved engine..surely at worse mpg the emissions have to be WORSE than the old engine despite what the lab tests say...
I believe the steering is this electro assisted malarkey in all mk4s is it not? In which case you can adjust the level of assistance using VAG COM.
I test drove a 2.0 sport not long ago and thought it was so so. It has the later cross flow 8v engine which is found in Beetles and Boras and things so is slightly different to the 8v in mk2 Ibizas and mk3 Golfs. It didn't have the same punch as my mk2 8v but it is a heavier car with 3 people in it and I normally drive round with just me in the car.
Fuel consumption on my mk2 8v is pretty reasonable but i have no idea what it is like in the mk4. I think these engines take quite a while to fully run in so consumtpion may improve.
Any ideas on what kind of run in period might be possible for this engine?
I guess that 10K would be the minimum, but what is realistic, if you ragged it would it be sorted by 8k? Or is it more of a long haul approach, could be looking at say 20-30k before it loosens up?
Had not realised that they had redesigned the head, just assumed it was a direct replacement! Thinking about it tho' they would have had to tweak something for emissions  :hide:
I think the crossflow head first appeared in mk3 Golfs/Jettas in the USA and has filtered accross over here in later VWs and now the Ibiza mk4. I think it has more tuning potential than the earlier engine but loses a little of the low down torque.
I've never owned a new car so know nothing about running in, but my car had 20k on it when I got it and it's noticably looser/quicker now at 45k. I would imagine it would be run in by 10k but still continues to loosen up and get better until about 40-50k.

hi,
We have a mk 4 2.0 sport in stock, a used one.Got only a few hundred miles on clock and you are quite welcome to come and have a spin if you want. Personally drove the vehicle my self and from usually driving a 1.4 felt very responsive, specially in mid range. Often found the tcs light flashing when leaving juctions (specially in the wet).
Good luck in your hunt.

Thanks for the offer!
Sadly you are a little far from the Guildford area for me! But I will press on...
anything that can get the TCS light flashing is fine by me
