I've ordered the FR lower grills to go on it, but they've not yet arrived...

even still, I took a few snaps this afternoon as I was driving about, and looking at them (with my rose tinted glasses), fail to see how anyone can think the ibiza looks anything other than great :p

The mk 4 IS ugly!!!
But you've made the best of it!!!
Seriously though 17's make all the difference to the mk4 just like 16s do on a mk2/3 - balances the styling out a lot.

we'll have to agree to disagree on that, m8, as I never felt anything like the pride I now feel when I look out the window to see my Tdi beezer, when I had the mk2 beezer Estillo.

...and that was a limited edition, pmsl!

Didn't feel any pride when I looked at either my mk2 or mk3 but it's still a better styled car than the mk4 IMO. MK4 - Modern yes, pretty no.

you were doing very well till you took pics of the front, its far too narrow looking for the stout side and rear of the car,and why do they insist on putting bloody rubbing strips on them for f*ck sake, looks lumpy and vile imho,

It looks great especially in pics 2 and 3! Definitely looks much better with 17's and a slight lowering.

we've seen the Cupra. Part of me thinks the styling of the Cupra is really nice (see a poll in the TDi Section where I'm debating swapping my Ibiza sport for a cupra), but once the rear spacers are on, and I've the honeycombe lower grill at the front, my car will begin to look less boring, and at the same time, less Blatant than the Cupra.

(the other part of me thinks the styling on the new Cupra is a little OTT, and likely to attract the wrong kind of attention)

Like the wheels on the Ibiza Cupra ;)

Motor looks nice Andy, just shows how a back ground can alter a pic and show just how a car looks as oppsed to a carpark at Tesco's or summat. I took a few scenic shots of mine whist in Wales..

bigger pics of the Ibiza cupra are on our Geneva Motor Show article on the mainsite.

The main problem with the Mk4 is the largely characterless sheet metal above the wheelarches, mainly on the front. Compare that to many other cars and you'll find there isn't as much of it there, this is because of two reasons 1) it isn't there and/or 2) a crease or less "blobby" surfacing breaks up the mass.

Also having no surface,edge/rim around the wheelarch doesn't help either, it doesn't break up the surface

Thats why the car generally looks undertyred. Looks even worse on the Cordoba, where the height of the boot makes it look heavier, so that the proportion of bodywork to glass looks wrong.

its a really basic rule of car design actually, so I'm suprised its happened. Can't think of any other car that looks quite so under tyred. It maybe this reason why the Cupra doesn't have side skirts as it makes the body coloured area taller.

Having said that, those 17" rims do really help and pretty much the first Ibiza4 which doesn't look undertyred.

The Fabia pics are a good example. The bulbous wheelarches (which would work really well on the Ibiza), and the more angled bonnet help reduce the visual height, yet at the c/l of the wheel the bonnet is probably the same height as the Ibiza (as they share engines etc.

we need to be careful when saying cupra. as they are bringing out a petrol cupra as well as the FR.

Were looking at a Cupra TDi here. not seen the petrol one yet ;)

you seem to have good points on designs there

cheers ross...and mmm I do like your Fabia :D

as you said a good backdrop, makes the foreground look so much nicer.

I went out with the intention of finding photogenic places to take snaps of my car, not only did it make for fun drive (lots and lots and lots of B roads), also ended up with the first photos I have of my car which I'm happy of, as they do it justice.

I sort of assumed it would be the same, The bumph on the press site seems to indicate so

Having said that, those 17" rims do really help and pretty much the first Ibiza4 which doesn't look undertyred.

Thats also helped by the fact I've 10mm spacers at the front (needed to clear the brake callipers), so the wheels really fill out the wheel arches.

15mm spacers will be on teh back in due course (probably end of next week or something), which again will help the wheels fill out the arches and reduce the undertyred look - whilst additionally increasing stability at "above moderate velocities" :p

The soot cloud is half the fun.
Its not something to be ashamed of - why else did Ian put straight out tail pipes on the back of sooty? :D

Aah, of course. I've seen the 17's before already but they didn't look that good!

Mine would desperately need spacers, too, but for starters they're illegal here. And I'm afraid of what they'd do to wheel bearings and such. Plus of course yet another costly mod only to make the car look better. :(
