hi all,
i've had my gti for about a year and it has always sounded very tappety. it has'nt got anyworst but it ruinins the sound of the engine and is about time i got it sorted.
is it likely to just be the hydrolic tappets need replacing? if so can this be done without taking the head off? (just remove the cams and replace tappets) or is it going to be a complete strip and rebuild?
the engines a 1.8 16v (ADL)130bhp with around 81K on the clock
also does anyone know if there is a manual for the ADL engine cos its not covered in the haynes for the ibiza, golf or corrodo? :thumbd:
thanks

adl is similar to kr from mk2 gti golf, i have ordered a few bits for my 2.0 16v with kr head but instead of getting them thru vw i already had an order with seat so asked for 94 ibiza rocker centre bolts.
what sort of life has it had ?my 16v never had any tappet probs for the 100k i had it,sold it on 150k and was still quite smooth?is it constant or just when cold?i don't know what i'm on about as i never had this problem, but would help me in future with my 2ltr16v now on 75k,but still sounding sweet, just a rattly engine i take it?
Could be tappets or camshaft probs, doesit sound like all the tappets are making a noise or just a few?
does it only do it when cold or all the time?
It could be the oil you use, do you put good stuff in?

its like it all the time hot or cold but loudest over no.1 cyclinder (cambelt end)
last time i changed the oil i used castrol gtx magnitec 0-40 but is been topped up with alsorts since then (probably could do with changing)
dont really know much about is privious life, although its on its 3rd drivers side inner cv joint and the gear box make a constant ratating noise when parked up! so is probable been driven as hard as i drive it. other than that its in good condition and drives fine.
just been quoted £9.25 each +vat for the tappets from gsf. i hope its something cheaper!

use thicker oil mate, 0-40 is like water. 10 or 15 -40 will quieten them down a little.

i'll give it a change tomorrow and see what happens, i''l also take the rocker cover off while my hand a dirty and see if there's any visable damage to the cams!
what sort of temperature is normal for the oil? it usually sits around 95-100 deg c
thanks.

bit high should warm up to 90 (slightly higer if driving on a bit) mine has never warmed to idle over 90 though ive seen over 120 after brunters day!

its never got that high (110 max) and it does go down quite quick after its had a good thrashing  after all it is a 16v and needs to be reved! (lots)
15w 40 was what i had in the adl on mine,10w40 i use in the abf 2ltr 16v

i think you'll find the cam chain is on the otherside nearset the distributor.

my abf/kr hybrid has the timing chain on rhs as you look at it and belt on lhs

when you lift the filler cap (cambelt end) you see end of the secondary cam so no chain there!
but thanks anyway.
when you put new oil in put a tin of that wynns supercharge stuff in, its like treakle and thickens the oil, quietening the engine down alot!
its the stuff that dodgy dealers fill knackered cars with to make the engine sound tight!!!
but one tin should sort your car out!

change the oil yesterday, it was blacker than your average goth and ran out the engine like water! (i think id better change it a bit more often)
desided to check the cams so 1 rounder hex bolt and a few bleading knukels later the cams look fine, very little ware.
filled her up with 10-40w and it seem to have improverd a little (noise and temperature wise).
might give that wynns stuff a go when it needs topping up.
thanks all, much appreciated :worship:
