Does anyone know if there is a short shift kit available for the Mk2 GTi (ABF) ???
I was told once that the computer holds the revs during gear change, and this is quite notciable when driving. Is it possible to change the timing, so that the revs are not held as long? If not then there's not much point in getting a short shift.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
The 02j B&M fits the 02a box. There was an 02a B&M kit but I guess this is unavailable now. Could try a Neuspeed one too.

I very much doubt that the engine holds the revs, I have certainly never noticed anything. Not that its particularly hard to time your declutching for a fairly close synchronisation, even after only a few months i have found that i do it subconsciously, though when i purpously try and do it i never get it right, go figure.
The hardest part i find is rev matching for downshifts, i still can never get that right. I suppose its just a matter of practice though.
but back to the topic, i find the cupra shifts a little long too, the most basic short shift modification is simply cutting down the length of the gear stick and replacing the knob. I think a better way invlolves replacing the rods/cables but i dont know anything about that. What im also interested in is increasing the weights on the rods/cables for a heavier and generally crisper, firmer change. still havent come across any guides for the MkII yet.
B&M list one for the mk2 Ibiza (part no 45106)
Im just wondereing if it will fit mine
Apparently the management does hold on to the revs.

and if you aint inspired to get the hacksaw and welder out you can buy one :p
02A box is terrible! I hate cable change and the ratios better suit a V8 than a 4cyl!!! I thought about a 3.94 final drive, but then it will rev it's ring off in 5th on the highway...
I think the B&M kit is still available for the 02A - about $400, though
P.S. I was told it was something to do with the ECU holding the revs too...But I don't run the stock ECU anymore and it still does it...Same in the Mk3 Golf 16v aswell, so it's definately ABF w/ 02A related. It's pretty annoying, though

is it not a mix of the heavy flywheel and fueling? not a deliberate attempt to keep revs?
You could be right on the flywheel part... I can't remember if the VR6 (same flywheel) does it - not driven one for nearly a year. I have to get mine lightened when I do the clutch, so it'll be interesting to see if it does fix it.

have you ever noticed that when stationary you rev it to near redline and lift off the pedal it takes an eternity to return to idle? ive always thought flywheel...
Yeah I know!! I think you're right. The big ass flywheel must carry SO much momentum, shame they never came with the Mk2 Golf 16v 2Y 5spd - much better and no 'gay'ble change either!

H8SV8S - I have tried the cut down.......as you would know, that still doesn't help with the delay, or the management holding the revs. I was changing gears then waiting an eternity before releasing the clutch, didn't work too well. As you've mentioned, you've changed management and the revs are still delayed, with that in mind I think I'll stay with the long throw, and look at ways to get the speed up to compensate for the slow changes!

I cut it down even more and it still sucks!!!

ohh cutting it makes it feel like shifter is broken, i just replaced the gear knob and it made the change better...slightly.

Same here. The mk2 gear knob is stupidly tall. I replaced it with a round momo one and not only did it look better, it improved the whole gearchanges feel
keep the revs up i say :p saves blipping it up in between gears
or try a decent soft limiter set for full throttle gear changing
depends on what you wanna do with it really as a full on race spec car aint gonna be no daily driver in the traffic - always a compromise
as for flywheel - reckon it is a tad heavy - weighing mine tomorrow and seeing what i can machine and balance out of it - anyone got a spare :p

Thanks Fla@pper!
Has anyone got, or know someone who has the 'Short throw shift arm' featured in this link? From what I've read it sounds pretty cheap and a good way to cut the throw down by 50%
I'd really appreciate any feedback anyone has! :D
