marc i have a head sitting in the shed which has 16 good valves (done 3k miles)
the same happened to me, all 8 intake valves bent and were replaced, car ran fine then broke a tappet that wasnt replaced originally then it was replaced but i wasnt happy with the flow job done so i bought a kr head instead. any way, i can strip the valves off for you and any other bits you want.
if you were looking cams, chip etc you are talking porting as well all in all you will spend well over a grand and the car will be a little harder to drive when in traffic, i would recommend porting chip and if you wanted mild cams, one other thing about cams, get hold of kr cams as they were designed for cars without cats and will see a little improvement over standard but keeping driveability very close to normal.
The most important bit of advice i can give you is get someone with a great seat/vw reputation. First time i didnt but second time i did and the fella did a perfect job.

also what you could do is get a complete kr head, this is what ive done and is why i have a spare head to tinker with. it was fitted inside 2 1/2 hours and started first time and to be honest felt immediately quicker than before. i got a complete kr engine for £200 quid so a head alone would be less but usually isnt split from bottom end when being sold.
Physically, the head goes straight on, it uses the same headbolts (new ones though as they are stretch bolts) rockercover is the kr item, i tried to use my cleaned up abf one but it was slightly fouling, this meant that kr rocker bolts (x2 m6x48) had to be used as the rocker cvr doesnt have the nut recesses that the abf does, other than that it uses all the same bits.
man i woke up this morning and i thought it was all just a bad dream, but it was not............. well all sounds good but if u was going to get it wld u recomend a new head or new engine? well i suppose it all depends on the damage, i wld really actually like a new engine a it wld nock a few k of the old milometer......................
listen ill keep in touch and if i cant sort something this end ill get in touch and mayb sort something out..... thanks again for the advice

noprobs your bottom end will be fine its your head you need to think about, do you spend £300-£700 (parts alone will sting over 200 inc 16 tappets probably 8 intake valves, timing belt, gasket kit, cam pulley if its sheared) getting it fixed and hoping it doesnt let go again (mine did) or buy a new head for 200 and same again on labour ?
the 16v engine is one of the best available and with mild tweaking/flowing to the new head before it goes on you could be looking at quite a nice running engine.
