I love your descriptive title.

check ignition leads & distributor cap.

does it fire at all then splutter or does the starter crank the engine, but no ignition?

either way - my money's on igntion lead/dizzy cap

my first step would be to buy a can of wd40 & apply liberally.

When you say it doesn't bump start what do you mean?, do all the lights come on the dash OK?, do the wheels lock when you drop the clutch out?.

you have got petrol in it?;)
coils are prone on long life mk2,happeing more often these days, pretty sure they are just sealed unit so not had one apart.
while yer there give the brake pedal a wiggle and tell me how play is in it,doesn't help you but may help me with my problem:)

no spark from coil or the lead coming from the coil?if the the former try another coil, latter new lead, try a scrappy for the coil, would be minimal cost i would say(put the lead in yer back pocket ;)

also,is there an earth lead connected to the coil?think mine did,may be worth checking this

Had same problem, found out it was a dodgy wiring connection. also found some very old sun glasess behind the dash! wierd!

Differnet car, same problem. Water vapour in the cylenders causing sensors to think it was full so no fuel got through. Blown head gasket. Hopefully not the same for you, check the water levels. Started after 3 or 4 attempts.
