I was chatting to a friend of mine last night about cars, she's just got a job a 160 mile round trip away from home and is going to need a new car for the journey. She's currently got a late 90's MX5 1.8 which is basically falling apart and she has to fill it up with fuel every 2 days. She loves it though and has been driving cars like that for years.

I took her out in my ibiza and she liked it. I suggested she look at SEAT diesels, maybe an FR Leon or perhaps Ibiza.

She needs economy and range for the long journey, she'd prefer auto or semi auto box and she likes sporty and a bit of poke but she doesn't have lots of money to spend having been out of full time employment for the last two years before getting this job. She's thinking 1 year or so old - she quite liked the looks of the VW Sirocco but it's too expensive. She likes the looks of my Ibiza but even that too her feels huge after the Mazda.

What spec/engine would you suggest for best value for money reliability and economy but with a bit of poke and style??

Why not look at older shaped Ibiza pd models? 3 of my friends have the 130 apart from the usual blowing boost pipes they are very reliable. Quite hard to find without moon miles but I'm sure if she hunts about there will be one to be had.

Or a 1.4 diesel polo cheap but not quite so reliable.
There are endless options depends how much she is looking to spend.

Well given that she's going to be doing 750 miles a week I think fairly new is a good idea (or very low mileage older) as she's going to end up doing so many miles!! As she was looking at the Sirocco most SEAT's are going to be better VFM possibly....?

Perhaps a Leon FR 2.0 TDI? Or is the 1.6 Leon any good...or is that engine better in the lighter Ibiza? I know the 1.2 TSI probably suits the ibiza better than the Leon.

an 80mile (each way) commute?
out of work for 2 years?
want to go out and buy a 1 year old car to save money?

id say get an old diesel, something alot cheaper than she is looking at and then review after doing job for a while.

True - but which models will be reliable and economical. Problem also is that she goes by looks... a lot!! She's had two seater sports cars the last 10 years, despite that she's a zumba instructor and has to carry a stereo system about so they're not exactly practical for that!!

Lass needs a reality check - been out of work for two years and I assume no money to speak of (silver spoon?). £20k plus motors (Scirroco) or a 3 year old one with 100k for £10k...

I think MkIV Ibiza is a good call.
