Out of interest, have you any japanese ancestry?
With any tattoo, my opinion is that original is best, should reflect you, not someone else before you

I've got a koi fish on my back. Liked the meaning of it being luck and also the fact that the japanese believe that out a group of fish swimming one direction, one out of a million will turn around and swim up stream turning into a dragon.
Which is why the koi should always be facing upwards when tattooed and not going down.
If you're gonna go with the Japanese tattoo do some research for a specialist, I went to Brighton to Nine Tattoo to get mine done by a guy who specialises in it. Was so happy, its quite big for my first one but go big or go home!
As for pain, its nothing to worry about! I like it as its not a pain to relate too, just little vibrations really.

Had mine done a year or so ago, simply drew a few shapes and designs I liked on paper and asked if they could knock me something origional up keeping with the mauri theme and this is what I came away with.

Looking at getting another in the new year, simple text to mark the birth of my daughter.
I'm surprised more people on here haven't got tattoos, guess I'm wrong to stereotype i.e male, boy racer, tattoos etc.

Why Mauri tattoos? They look proper arse, unless they're proper ones.
No offence lol, but it looks like a child drew it.
No offence??? You couldn't have come across more offensive with your attitude lol.

Maori tattoos look cool on Maori people. I bet proper Maori people hate the fact that everyone has wannabe ones.
IMO there is nothing original about any tattoo. In fact a tattoo-less person is quite original these days. I went swimming a while ago and I couldn't believe how many people had them, mostly really bad ones I might add.

Aye exactly, that's what pisses me off about mauri/maori ;) tattoos.
Funny that you say that, cos when I got my first tattoos, me da said to me "don't be a dickhead, why don't you be original and not get any"
and he's right tbf. They're common as f*ck. lol

Dads are always right.
I wonder if any of the Chinese lettering tattoos that people have say "dickhead" or some other insult?
People miss the point of tattoos, most have them because they are trendy but they are a form of art, I am covered in tattoos most you can't see except my arms but all of them mean something to me which is why I have them, not got Chinese writing I may add lol

Sums it up for me
When we were on a package holiday recently (the first one we have ever done), it was easy to spot British people not only because they are typically fat with rolls of flab and spare tyres everywhere, unstylish and burnt/red/brown, but they have at least one/several tattoos.
Most foreigners don't seem to have any/many tattoos in Europe from what I have seen and the ones who do typically tend to be less chavvy.
Tattoo's are pointless minging things in my opinion. All of them.

Kinda agree what you're saying, but my tattoos aren't chavvy
I know what my name is, so I don't need to have it tattooed down my arm in old english writing.....

All down to personal preference and what is socially acceptable I guess. I know down the line they will no longer be "cool" but they still have meaning and no ones going to forget what their own tattoos mean.

Nah getting old will be half the fun of them, remembering where you were/what you were like when you got each one.

Why spend money colouring it in? You can't see it.......................
Love reading some of the comments posted. I don't understand why all the hating but each to there own.
I think tattoos are a great way to express yourself but as someone said there doesn't have to be a personal reason for having one.
I consider some one who has tattoos is doing the same as someone who chooses to modify there car. They do it because they like it and most accept this will probably change over time..
I never take offence when someone doesn't like my tattoo in the same way as I don't take offence when someone says I don't like those alloys or you should have got this car instead.
Love looking at different tattoos that people have as the skill in some of the work is amazing and the artists are very talented.
But again just my opinion lol
I've got to admit, being 40% covered in ink and spending thousands over the last 16 years, having a vast array of differing designs adorn my bodice (which is not fat or burnt red, just to quash that moronic pre-conceived notion!), it has become blatantly noticeable that a tattoo is now probably the most extreme from of fashion accessory.
I personally grew up listening to hard rock/ heavy metal and had a stepfather who was heavily into the drag racing/ Strretfighter motorbike scene, in which I spent my formative years looking at pictures of dudes in Backstreet Heroes magazine and early Kerrangs hoping that one day I can be a tattooed Rock n roller who rides chopped bikes! I got the first 2 nailed, it's just the bikes I never got the hang of!
To be honest, I accept the fact that like most things in life, some like, some hate. It's all about taste. I hate jeans that are elasticated at the bottom, it doesn't mean I think the wearer is the antithesis of evil and is on earth to lead us to the gates of Gommorha or Salem to commit mindless acts of buggery and sell our souls to lucifer!
The main rule in tattooing is buy cheap, look shit! Also, getting inked in kitchens usually means a healthy dose of Hepatitis C!
Haters gonna hate, potatoes gonna potate.......
