View Full Version : Gearbox Oil
Hi All
Recently changed my gearbox oil from Redline MTL to Castrol Syntrax. Reason for change was that on checking the level, found it to be low and had no more MTL. MTL only available where I live by mail order (from Redline or Demon Tweeks) so changed whole lot.
Syntrax is ok but no where near as good as Redline MTL - better shifting and loads better when cold. Next time will stick with MTL and buy a few bottles (US Quarts - 2 bottles per fill is ample).
Shame its not available more widely.
Also, with a rod change box, manual says 2L required but I think 1.75L is ample going on 'flows out of fill bolt' method.
Cheers

oh yeh and how ?i presume the filler is the plastic stopper type thing on the top of the box and going by the laws of gravity the drain plugs is somewhere on the bottom .mine too is a rod change 020? have ya got a short shift as i've drawn a blank (mk2 golf one don't fit)

Do not even think of putting oil in the plastic cap ontop of the bellhousing ! This is a plug for installing timing apparatus and in here sits the clutch - clutch's dont like oil !
The drain is on the bottom of the box and the fill is on the side near the wheel - both are big allen key plugs - 17mm I seem to remember but dont quote me on that.
I change my gearbox oil every 6 months or so but thats because it gets a LOT of stick on tracks. Each time I change there is some metal in there (esp copper from synchro rings) and this is abrasive if left unchecked. Regular drivers should go for 3 yrs or so I think - check with Seat dealer for service interval.
If its not been changed for 7 yrs it needs doing.
You will know if your's is an 020easily - has it got a cable to change the gears or a rod setup ? Rods=020, cable=02A. Never tried to get a short shifter for mine.

cheers rob,no not a good idea to oil clutch(remember a m8 putting oil on his drum brakes on his bike cos they juddered:)
) defifnatley o2o then rod change,i think for short shift you have to take a bit out of the counter weight on the gear box, which i wasn't willing to do not having a spare incase of on of my moments or use mk2 golf one with out the weight which would make for shit shift i think
