Oh no! Just got a copy of Top Gear Mag. (well somebody has to buy it) and Mr Clarkson rates the Ibiza Mk1 as his 42nd worse car of all time - I'm gutted! He mentions a 1.5 and 1.7 version - not even mentioning a 1.2. Was there ever a 1.7? Still, undeterred and unembarrassed, I'll be out autotesting in mine on Thursday evening lol.

There was a Sportline (I think it was called) 1.7, not a huge number built, it was a late addition (92/93 ish), facelifted mk1 with a bodykit, generally white or red from memory.
42nd worst car? That's a bit unfair really. It's been a while since i've driven one, but I don't recall it being a bad little car at all. Certainly nicer than the Triumph Acclaim or Fiat Panda I occassionally got to drive at about the same time.
42nd out of the cars ever built?thats not bad,or just "i wear jeans and a jacket "clarksons
i wouldn't take it to heart mate ,he is after all a c0ck

Quite right. And I bet a 1.7 in a MK1 might have put in some quite reasonable times in its day.
How 'interchangeable' is the engine. Could a 1.2 be swapped for 1.5 without too much hassle? Or is it possible to fit another lump eg Fiat?
Would be fun to try a few modifications and blow away some of the competition at the sprints! :p
Yes, you can swap engines/gearboxes quite easily in mk1. We still have our mk1 running, and it ain't that bad at all!
