Don't laugh... BUT I had a 300 odd mile drive yesterday in a hire car, a Skoda Fabia 1.4 16v model.

It came with alloys, disks all round, heated front seats(nice:)), electric windows all round, remote alarm/locking, and a nice sounding radio.

The car was very good for its class. Well built, less rattles in its 12500miles than my Ibiza currently has !!!! it went OK (for 100bhp 1.4) drove well, smooth, handled well, very composed. It drove like a larger car.

Steering (power) was very light, but OK.

All in all, very impressive little motor, and as its the base for the new Polo & Ibiza platforms, then it should work out very well.

If you can get over the Badge, then you get yourself an excellent little motor.

Is it just me or does anyone else think the new Corolla is more than a tad inspired by the Fabia?

I had a test drive in a fabia in the summer of 2000 (when I still had my old skoda), nice car to drive and very comfortable for a guy of my stature but found the 16v engine a little hesitant and had a little lag when you gave it some gas tho when it did decide to go it did go like a little rocket. the only thing I had against it is that it only came as a 5-door :(

I also had the hesitancy on this one, but it is exactly the same as my step daughters 16v Polo and her dads Gti Polo... Fly by wire which has really bad progression from idle to part throttle.
Easily stalled.. It would get on your tits in time for sure.

chassis/floorpan etc is a derivative of the new Polo, which is also used on the new Ibiza
