View Full Version : Running in your engine.
Am getting a new Leon SE Copa 1.6TDI next week and when i get a new car i usually never go full throttle till around 1000 miles or so and never go over 2000RPM for the 1st few hours and not over 2500RPM for the first 100mile! also i usually get the 1st service done alot earlier than recommend by the manufacture to get rid of any partials caused by the engine running in!! what way did you drive when you had a new car and do you think it helped it in the long??

most important thing about running in car is to let it warm up before you use it
also let it cool down after use
limit the revs but do use it just dont redline it
the thing people forget about is the tyres and brakes
if you want to change the oil early then do at about 5000 miles

I agree. Let it warm up but once warm use the whole rev range but not redline obviously. Driving too slow for too long causes other problems. Cars are like us. They need a good warm up and stretch from time to time. I have seen cars that are abused daily but allowed to warm up and cool down properly out last and hold performance better than a car that I's just plodded along. For the first few hundred miles be careful and steady but after that open it up a bit.

They have a great post on a break in procedure. Those guys over there are ANAL about doing things properly and a few of them are approaching 500,000 miles on their Diesels (some of them are already there!)
The break in procedure they describe doing lasts for a whole 10k, so if you DO want to do that, don't expect good fuel economy at first. :P
Some people choose not to do it that way, I myself decided just to drive normally, but a couple of times a week I extend the rev ranges out to get the turbo working to help the rings seat.
yeah i always warm the engine up first and after 100mile i use the revs abit! after a journey i let it sit to cool for at 2mins even if am in a hurry lol! ive an M3 E46 and i always let it warm up and let it cool down however there has been many occasion ive ragged the nuts of it! i always change oil every 6000miles and so far ive done 30,000miles in it and never had any bother. thanks for the replies guys its much appreciated cheers :
