View Full Version : EDS (electronic differential system) problems
My SE TDi110 has EDS, which in the owners manual says you should hear a noise when it is working, but that it will disengage if the system gets too hot. Trouble is, I've never been able to get it working,even if I put one wheel on grass and one on a grippy surface....any ideas??

The EDS system on Leons/Toledos is linked to the antilock brakes and is supposed to work by detecting one driven wheel moving faster than the other (ABS in reverse)
When it detects this it limits the amount of power to the spinning wheel via either hydraulics or servo (not sure which this system uses) within the differential (not the ABS) so this is why you dont feel anything as all its doing is supplying the wheel with more traction a higher percentage of power, though not all like a proper mechanical limited slip diff. I think the manual may have lost something in the translation.

The problem is that pulling away quickly on a wet roundabout, or out of a tight junction (even in the dry) can cause drastic wheel spin in 1st and 2nd gear. Its definatly only one wheel spinning when dry, as clouds of smoke drift out of the wheel arch and past the window. Surely if this was working 100% it should be noticable???

The EDS should pull the traction to the otehr side (the side that isn't slipping). However, it may not be a 100% swing of power...it may only be able to pull over 50% of the torque (anyone know??). Hence why you also have TCS to brake the wheels even further and reduce engine power to stop any power spins of the wheels.
Maybe your EDS is working (if it wasn't then all the power would go through the spinning wheel and acceleration of the car would be slow). Maybe your TCS isn't....

MY01 and later TDI110's all have swithable TCS as standard....I take it yours is an early car?
If you've only got EDS then you need to find out how much "lock up" this system provides....anyone got any info?

Yes, mine was registered Oct2000, and there is definatly no switch as on the 20VT's.
I think a traction control system might be worth while when I get it chipped!!

As I said its only a percentage and it wont stop you wheelspinning full stop. Only a mechanical LSD with diff lock will completely stop this happening.
PS you must be giving it some serious grief as I have problems spinning my Leon Cupra even in the wet. You have to be a complete hooligan before the traction control cuts in. What tyres have you got?.....

The original tyres were 195/65 15's Firestone energys, complete crap in the wet, but not too bad in the dry. I had to replace them in a hurry when I noticed the fronts where on legal limit day before trip to Germany, so I got a complete set of Falken 205/60 15's to get by until I get some Curpa 16's. They are even worse, lift off over steer is too much now, and although I can go through standing water alot quicker than the Firestones they just dont grip in wet.
As for wheel spinning, if I change from 1st to second near red line (say 4500rpm) its not a problem, but if i change at 3500rpm to keep in power band it spins like hell in 2nd as it drops to about 2000.
When I get my 16's I shall go for Goodyear Eagle F1's, they are awsome in the wet.

This sounds familiar. I've driven quite a few cars with Firestone booties on. They are quite a hard compound which is completely sh*te in the wet. Falken's are much the same.
If you have the budget (£100 or so a corner) the 205/55 16 P6000's standard fit on the Leon Cupra are very good and seem to suite the car. Had Dunlop SP Sport 2000's on my old Toledo V5 and they were good as well both wet and dry.

I am not sure the explaination on the EDL/EDS is right....
It applies the brake to the spinning wheel which in turn via the conventional diff passes the power to the non spinning wheel. They is'nt any electrickery internal to the manual box. TCS in conjunction to this also winds off the throttle to prevent excess power feeding through the wheels.
I run a quiafe diff in my Jetta an ATB/Torsen type, and this does give excellent traction in the wet. Off the line though I still smoke both front tyres though http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/biggrin.gif

Just thumbed through the owners manual and it appears you are right on the braking side of things but there must be something to assist this in the diff or whats the point of calling it an electronic diff lock. They might as well call it brake assisted diff lock. Hence its nowhere nere as good as a proper LSD....!

Yes, the P6000's are my second choice, but I need some 16" wheels first.
The reason I like the Eagle F1's is cos I have a set of 16" ones on my Montego GTi Estate (don't Laugh) and they provided me enough grip at an MG track day in the wet to be one of the quickest cars on the circuit comprising much more powerful Montegos, MGF's and even an Audi TT.
