My brothers Leon Cupra (180bhp) has recently been to the local dealer when the ECP (engine management light) came on and the engine was running badly. The garage returned the car and the light was not on but the engine was still running bad. I used my VAG-COM and found an error with the MAF sensor and temp sender unit, which we have replaced and the engine now works perfectly. Some how the garage has managed to turn the ECP light off so that it does not report errors. It does light up when you first turn the key in the ignition and goes out like it should (normal diagnostic run), which makes me think that it’s a software change rather than a lead being disconnected. We have unplugged many sensors to replicate an error which is picked up by VAG-COM but does not switch the ECP light on - does any one know if this can be switched back on using VAG-COM and how?

That's a new one. The only thing I can think of is that they changed the coding of the engine or the instrument cluster to a country where the malfunction light is not needed / used.

Bloody hell, I'm not saying they have done that, but, if they have they ought to be shot!!!! I should get back to the dealer and demand an explanation!!!

Thanks for the advise - will look to see if the country coding has been changed. My brother isn't too keen on taking it back to the garage (main dealer!!) as they never seem to be able to fix the problems.

Thanks again
