The other day i saw a Pug 106 GTI with a big sticker in the rear windscreen advertising "www.pugperformance.com" or something along those lines, so i thought why doesn't our site have one?
Something that we can recognise each other when out and about, rather than annoying some person who is oblivious to the site and its' members.
I’m not saying it has to be really big and fill up the whole window cuz that would be a bit naff. Just something big enough u can read from the car behind let’s say.
Fill the poll in to see what the other members think about this idea.
i would only be interested in a small one, about 6-7 inches max, so I voted yes
We've been thinking about this, but ive just not had time to implement it with work commitments, and my work regarding the Seat Drivers Club.
The main header picture is too complicated an image to use on a window sticker, not from a technical standpoint, but really from a visual point.
If it was on a car with all the busyness of the image it wouldn'y be clear.
For a car sticker simple is best solid text or logo with one or 2 colours max.
This is a mock up idea i did just now in 5-10 mins. Simple nothing elaborate gets the message across.
As i work for a label printers, I should be able to get some printed soon, just need a slot on the machine as we only have one that does overlaminating, which is for window stickers, all the other presses we have are for standard back adhesive labels.
take it you like that. :)
ooo, Yes sir. I love it. :D
no offence what so ever, but I would just prefer the web address , maybe in cut vinyl
I have a contact who is doing my rally car, but to be honest, there not as cheap as I thought.
something like this

If they require special cutters for the lettering thats the expense.
Basically it would be easier to have the white text printed on clear material set to a 6 or 7" rectangle, but i'll have to look into it, as it may require a special polyprop material to look right on car glass, no problem on a white or coloured material, but clear is a bitch, if its not right it just makes the ink/print look cloudy.
I'll do some tests and see how well i can get white to look on clear polyprop, its the material and a special shape cutter that would bump up those costs you have described.
If we have the material and i can blag 20-30 metres of it, that should be enough to do around a thousand stickers.

Though that would work on a 3 door Ibiza, going to look a bit daft on a 5 door Leon aint it?

1st on the list pls mate!!
:D :D :D
well they have a plotter (made by Gerber) they get the illustrator file, convert it into a Gerber friendly file and then they load the sticker material onto the roller and the the plotter cuts it out, its just a small knife following the converted vector lines. The time consuming (and I assume costly time labour wise!) is the deweeding all the unwanted items, then you need to back it up onto a carrier sheet.
i'll investigate on Monday
I'm afraid i'm one of the 2 people that have voted no, if the police pull me over for speeding and see a sticker advertising a car club, i can see me not getting away as lightly as if my car was totally unmarked and unmodified (externally), and my uncle who is in the traffic police has confirmed that although this shouldnt affect the outcome of being stopped it probably would :(
ive still got that list for the glass stain type versions if you need a copy ??
www.seatcupra.net in a an etched style maybe ?
OOOOH and you see the logo @ the top left ??
If anyone has details on how i can graffitti that on a wall in counter strike PLEASE PLEASE mail me ?

Yup i saw a similar thing last year, made by Barco. Cost wise it seemed to be the cost of the equipment. Printing presses can have lower costings cause they do so much more work in the smae time scale, so earn more money in the time span of a job.
These plotter/cutters are slower machines, making less money, so paying themselves off much more slowly
sounds similar. All the racecar stickers are done like this.
Anyway, this is the sort of thing I was thinking for the Leon for example

Andy,
That second sticker would be the sort of one id like to put on the car.
A mate of mine had a load of them made up for his business, ill see how much it cost him but i dont think it was that expensive.
People would be happy to pay a small price to cover the cost im sure for whoever makes them up.
//\\//\\ark
you could have two different sizes as well, because its vector based, they just put in a scale before the send the job to plot and hey presto.

Glad every1 has liked the idea i brough up then except for a few with there valid points which i can understand. But Mosser u know the answer to ur problem :p You shouldn't be speeding anyways. Or at least you shouldn't get caught ;) But i think most of the people here have opted for a small rather discret but yet seen logo rather than plastering it on their back window.
Theres certainly a few people who also know a bit about the printing process which is good!
To be honest out of all the design ideas u have come up with i think andyb's is the best just for it's simplicity and the fact you can put it any where on the car not just the back window. Cuz i own a 5dr i don't have a large rear qtr window. If i did i would put it there but i guess it will be just as good in my rear window on by the number plate.
Keep the ideas coming the all sounds pretty good! And hopefully we will have a finished product that we could get our hands on for a small fee that cover the costs.
cheers for the input!
I know!, but statistically i only get caught every 150,000 miles and get 3 points every 200,000 miles driven, which i consider not too bad considering the type of car i'm driving!!
Id be interested in one if it goes ahead:D
Andy, thats a good idea. My hairdressers Hubby does car design logos for a living. I will sort something out. :)

U think u've got it bad, im an 18yr old student driving a '96 Ibiza with 15" alloys (my first car :D ) around Cheltenham. Young drivers dont really have a good rep around here with all the Boy racers out on sundays (and every other day for that matter). So you would have thought i would get pulled every time a cop saw me but touch wood i've never been pulled! I think it might be the fact its a 5dr it kinda draws attention away from it.

let me know, i can do some Illustrator artwork, although its only text, so we could probably get away with that and just requesting Arial or something like that

What about the background? Will it be a cut around the lettering or will it have a transparent background? And for the sticker to be placed on the body work like andyb's picture shows the sticky side will have to be on the back, but what if u want to put it on the rear widow (or any window) the sticky stuff will have to be on the front of the lettering. How would this effect printing costs? What is going to look the best for the cheapest basically :D
the letters are cut and then all the bits you dont need are taken away leaving the letters on a backing sheet. Then a semi transparent "carrier" is applied on top, which then holds the letters when you peel it off for application.
It sticks on the outside, that doesnt matter. Just look at a race car and the logos are done this way.
You can have it reverse cut so that you can apply from inside

They look good, but how about the logo on the top of the page as a sticker ???
I know ZBOYD said it's best with 2 colours, is that because of cost ? I think 2 colours look a bit plain ???
would we have a copyright issue with the SEAT part of the logo. I know when I helped out with some graphics for the Smart website, that they couldnt use the font or the orange triangle thats part of the logo.

What about something like this ?
I've just phoned a company and they have quoted £61+vat for 100 stickers - 13" wide/ 1 colour = £0.72p each.
Another place will do the 17 cut-out letters 1" tall for www.seatcupra.net on a template for £1.53.
How do thse prices compare?

nope the reason i say 1 or 2 colour is for clarity, you imagine trying to read that from the back of a car, at traffic lights for instance, doesn't really get the message across quickly and clearly as just a simple block colour label or as Andy has said, just cutout text.
As were a self adhesive label company, specialising in colour flexo, for Food, Automotive, Home consumer and pharmaceutical products were not geared up really for the kind of thing that Andy has suggested, we dont have that kind of equipment.
All i can generate is adhesive backed or, laminated front adhesive (for window stickers) on a rectangle based cutter, as we cant order a special cutter for this it would cost a fortune.
I did the SEAT Drivers Club ones which are simple and effective.
I can print just text onto a long rectangle, maybe on clear material, coloured white as andy has shown. in any font at any size, as Andy has mentioned, i myself also use Illustrator and Artpro, for vector based graphics which means they can be used at any size.
But we are also affected by the repeat length an pull of our machines, the largest possible recetangle i can do is around 11 inch, as we are narrow web based, we usually only print labels for bottles etc, ie TCut, and TripleWax, and we also do Henkel stuff like No More Nails tubes.
Best i can do really, maybe not ideal, but id be free :)

I think most people agree that, it doesn't have to be big as long as it readable. And Free is the best price ever! ZBOYD can u just make 1 pilot sticker and scan it for every1 to see ur idea? It would well appriciated if u did!

ZBOYD,
I know what you mean, but they do look realy plain, espeialy when your car is parked if you know what i mean.
The thing about the block lettered ones i didn't like is the white background.

Understandable! I think most people are drawing up their own idea of stickers. So draw one to see what ur idea of one is! But personally i think the best sticker design is by Andyb. But then again ever1 has their own taste.
The nearby VAG dealer to me "Autohaus" has a small simple sticker on it
next time you're up this way - I bet you spot loads... it's almost subliminal
I've had my old web address on my car 2" high writing (too big) in white on a clack part of my window - it stands out a mile.
white is the way forward. simple also - unless you don't want to read it.
like Z offers free is great - but those that offer stuff for free shouldn't be rushed too much (we've got other things to do too:D)
In its most simplest form it would be like Andy shows, or you could go with something like ive attached here, which also has a tag line underneath.
Ive shown it in varying colours, also it can be printed white onto clear material so you get exactly the same effect as what Andy showed in his mockup.
Anyway, i'll probably get something run up like this on clear and see what it looks like on my car, as its free, its upto you lot to decide. If you want something different, then thats your choice.

ZBOYD I think they're pretty good! Could you print a batch out in each of the colours or would we have to pick a colour and stick with it?? I think that design clearly advertises the web site and looks pretty good. Dont u think?

ZBOYD,
They look better than the plain text ones (colour on white), i can grow to like them !
Any chance of IMPERIAL BLUE ???????
Give the guy a chance lads, he's editing the mag too.
"The best things come to those who wait"
Im not making them to order, we need to stick to one or 2 types, and i cant promise a time frame as im very busy at work, and it would need to be slipped in when the presses aren't so busy, which at the moment isn't happening. :p
I think white on Black is fairly neutral, and i can do white on clear, to be honest colour ones just make it more difficult to please people, so lets stay neutral.
Another thing is for these to be done quickly, they will need to be exterior stickers rather than window stickers, but i'll choose a good material that can withstand the elements. The reason for this is the machine that usually does laminated window stickers is a pain to setup and run, where as the other machines are faster, but only do normal back adhesive stickers. I'll see anyway.
I recommend only sticking it to glass though if i can't do the inside out window stickers, do not put the labels on the cars exterior paintwork, only its glass, as the adhesive may mark the paintwork of the car.
I'll let you all know nearer the time, but dont expect anything until well after the track day im just too busy.
CarreraGT
26-02-2002, 15:14
Sounds good to me ZBOYD! If u can make one with clear background material it would be excellent! But im not too sure about sticking it to the outside of the car. As u said its probably better to stick it the glass. But what about the windscreen wipers? If i want to stick it to the rear windscreen the rear windscreen wiper is more likely than not gonna screw it up!
All good points and i'll have to test it out on my own car to see.
This is the chap I have in mind. He can do number plates the whole 9 yards. Because Z is a busy boy, and if the price is right would you guys be willing to give him a go (pending the price of course)

£0.95p for each sticker based on a order quantity of 100.

I place my vote in favour of the web address in vinyl. I had a bespoke vinyl cut for the top of mk6 Escort and that only cost £20 so a bulk order of small ones should come out at to many per unit. (sorry about the English just been typing up a business essay). Students !!

Our friends at Audi-Sport have just had some car stickers produced and have kindly given me the name of their supplier who I have e-mailed today for a price.

Brian,
I very much doubt it. I had a day off Friday and rang around, most companies have a 500 minimum quantity order. I’m hoping this one will be different.
I’m sure a lot more members will be interested one we have a design and priced agreed upon.
Just a thought, if this ever get off the ground should not the price include something towards the running of this site, we can’t keep expecting Lee & Co to do it all?
Reply I got today:
Dear Lee,
They look simple enough....we can acheive that in any letterstyle/colour you desire.
Costwise for a healthy order (250+) they'll be about £1.00 each.
Let me know everyone's views on this...
Many thanks,
John Barrell

Is about £1.00/£1.50 a sticker too expensive?
Sorry guys, I've not had a chance to get to the sticker company yet, this week I promise!!!
OK, as there doesnt seem any interest, I can probably get an arrangement from them where they cut the letters (one colour just text) and then I de-weed (remove all the redundent bit of the sticker) them, back them up for the few that seem interested. It does take a while to deweed these things with a scapule...but if its only a few, then I'm 'appy to do that.
Let me find out the cost first of say 50, all the same.
I would prefer stick outside, I also think it might be cheaper from memory as you have to have a different grade sticker (different adhesive) if you stick if from the inside as your looking through the adhesive layer.
I'll let you know
Andy
I am sure a lot of people will be interested in buying a sticker, I will be on the list.
Just make sure you choose you design right because that will depict weather or not people will buy the Sticker.
It might be a good idea to come up with a few designs and get the members to vote for which one they like best, and I am sure that People would pay £3.00 for the stickers the only problem would be to work out how the members would pay for them and what the postal cost would be.
Cheers
Ok, In this weeks update I will ask for those who would be interested in buying the stickers. I am sure that more than 250 would be for £1.

Right, My matey John is going to make me one up very shortly to go in the back window. What dimensions are you looking for?
Let me know quickly, cos I want to get a picture up today
inside or outside. I would personally prefer outside, then I can stick it where I want :D but I think I'm in the minority
I personally wouldnt want it any bigger than about 160mm ( 6 1/4 inches I think)
Whats the lenght and Width you think we should go for then Andy
length as stated above (although I would prefer smaller than this between 100-120mm, I'm sure I would be in the minority!), height is a bit dependent on the font, but I wouldnt stretch it, just keep it the same as before.
I also assume white.
Not sure if you want www.SEATcupra.net or www.seatcupra.net I prefer the former because i) easier to read ii) technically correct
Not sure if you need the www bit either. I think the latter would benefit that

Is that on all SEAT's or just the new model SEAT's cuz i got a '96 model Ibiza (5dr black bumpers).
The sample one I’m getting made is internal, picking it up Friday and will post pics weekend so you can compare ‘inside/outside’.
I was planning to place mine at the top of the rear window under the brake light. Will have to see what looks best.
15 Inches in length and 1.5 Inches in height
Thats very long and thin..... (no pun intended)
Could these be sorted out by saturday as I wouldn't mine seeing one 'in the flesh'
Oh and Brian - I agree - Serpentine looks good. but then no one asked me did they.

We should all use this font.

Post a link cuz i dont have it on my comp.!
here is a link
http://www.adobe.com/type/browser/P/P_153.html
I've used it before for Marlboro bits. They used Serpentine Bold Itallic (btm one) for saying "world Championship team" and the driver names for the last couple of seasons when Marlboro sponsored McLaren
Did look cool, so if it didnt hit the cost then I think I'd agree with Brian and his "clan"
The "SEAT" done in Handel Gothic looks nice too, makes a definition between the SEAT and the Cupra!
I think you need the correct fonts on your machine to be able to display this correctly

Humm looks good! I like the light and the light oblique versions! You say they were on the McLaren? Is that the Red and White ones before they merged with Mercedes and became black and silver? I think the engines before Mercedes where Honda's but dont quote me on that! I think it will make a very nice sticker font!
Can't open your attatchment brain im at Uni and they dont have winzip :( just have to wait tilll i get home tonight!
But im sure that will look nice too! :p
What program are you guys using that has all these fonts? I was looking for fonts to download but no luck on a entire package that was free! Are you using Adobe Photoshope by any chance?
Carerra - yes, the lettering in Bold oblique style was used on the Marlboro sponsored McLarens in 95 and 96 (West took over in 97). The word Marlboro wasnt in this type face it was secondary stuff such as branding in the pits, Marlboro strap line and on the cars, the drivers name.
Marlboro used it on the bikes and other bits until about two years ago.
You have to make sure the letters are not too thin, or it will be a pain to deweed and then apply, its only about 15cm long afterall.
I personally use Adobe Illustrator which is a vector graphics program (similar to Corel draw) and Photoshop. The Fonts dont come as such with the program, you have to buy them etc. I have quite a few on my home machine, mainly from freelance work but unfortunately not the serpentine font.
If any probs getting the Serpentine font, if it gets used, let me know, couple of places that owe me a favour:)
Link added for CarreraGT....

The site allows Testing of the font too! cool
heres an example of its use
saved out two versions from the myfont website
First one Serpentine Bold Oblique - my choice of the two
(left the www. in as I'm not sure if its dropped)
Serpentine Medium Oblique
(wouldnt want to go thinner than this)
Andy,
Agree, the bold looks good.
What colour do people want.
My preference is light grey.
Andy
Agree, Serpentine Bold Oblique looks best.
As regards colour, I think white would be most visible and being a neutral colour will go with any car colour.

Yeah white isn't very pretty! It looks like they 4got to paint it in the factory!
I saw a Silver Leon out side PC world in Cheltenham and it had some Graphics on it advertising they persons Company but i can't remember what it said it was "CGI" or something like that! But i dont think we will go to that extreme will we guys! We'd look like a Profes Racing team though ;)

Nothing when u make add a few extra spoilers and Alloys but bog standard its not going to be the obvious choice when u can have Arthrite blue or Silver.
Hopefully collect the lettering today. Will put in car tomorrow and post pics. As previously mentioned I was planning to put it centrally at the top of the rear window, (inside), just under the top brake light – any thoughts?
Just checked the sweep of the rear wiper on the Leon. The only place you can possibly place an ‘outside’ sticker is as above, i.e. just under the top rear brake light.
Btw the cost of a one off, (25mm high) was £4.34 + VAT = £5.10
Ian (Minty)
I’ll ask about other colours, (Blue), when I collect today and let you know

nice one mate!
Ian,
Just collected the lettering, they can virtually do any colour you want, hundreds of colour swatches to choose from, forgot to ask if more expensive than white.
andy i think your design is by far the best and would look awsome in light silver in the back window and 2 rear side windows....good effort fella:) :) :)
andy, the sticker looks wicked mate
'Stick' me down for one !!
('scuse the pun !!! :D)
