Anyone know more about this other than whats in Autoexpress this week - it says 255bhp version of the 3.2 engine with option of DSG in the UK this time.

Sadly the price is expected to be £25,000 base 3door up to £27,000 for DSG 5door

its a photoshop special....the mkV will be called the R36 (3.6 litres), and will need more than 255bhp to make it as quick as the mkIV R32. i've heard that mkV golfs weigh in at 1800kg (mkIV's about 1500kg)

I;ve got a mk5 golf and its a fcukin plug. had it for 7 weeks heres the probs

Cruise control doesnt work
one of the front wipers doesnt work
diff bearing away ( looking forward to both front wheels locking up)
passengers door doesnt unlock when you use the button on the key
heater is either full cook or freezing - Nothing in between
drivers electric window doesnt work half the time
had to put 2 litres of oil in it already.....

I am not liking it, suppose its a let down cause I have been looking forward to getting it for nearly 4 months, then when it arrives it was a bit of a let down.

Handles better than mk 4 though, even if the build quality isnt as good and doesnt look as good

oh its a 1.9 tdi and its gutless...

1800kgs - you have got to be kidding?! Do you know what current cars weight this much? For starters 5 series BMW Touring WITH diesel engine almost makes 1800 kgs. Did the make the new Golf out of lead?
This is exec saloon and above sort of weight and the quicker ones run engine slarger than 3.6L packing more than 255bhp

i did say 'ive heard'...meaning i can't confirm this...but i bet they are really really heavy.

~1,477 kgs for the R32. Hot hatch @ +300 kgs to ~1,800 kgs is some middle age spread.

And here's all these other manufacturers trying to negate the extra weight for safer cars by using platics and alu. Audi already have the techonology for alu cars so why not apply some of this to pare down a porky Golf.

Dont believe everything you read in the mags. The whole article is based on "an insider", which never fills me with hope!

The pictures in the mag are photoshops of the Concept GTI official press release pictures. I would say that most of the article is there just to generate interest in the MK5. Nothing is official for the next "R" branded Golf. However VW are currently working on a new 3.6 V6 engine which is designated for the Touareg. That said, the engine will also fit elsewhere in the VW range, and VW have also registered the "R36" name.... so watch this space ;)

Maybe it's got something to do with the double panelled doors, ie if one gets dented or damaged you just get the outer panel replaced, and not the entire unit ie door - maybe it just adds to the weight, in a bid to make insurance claims cheaper and VW cars more insurance friendly ?

You mean like door skins which they already do for cars today?

From Volkswagen Driver Mag:
Unladen wieght of (in pounds) mk4 R32 - 3256 2Door model
mk5 2.0 TDI - 3200 4Door model

for reference the weights given for a mk4 TDI 150 2Door -2796 pounds and a new shape Audi A3 2.0 TDI 2955 pounds

You missed the point but acf8181 got it, i am only going on what shorty said on Top Gear last night.

Fen your probably right, maybe insurance companies can now scam us for even higher premiums instead or reducing them ?

Unladen wieght of
mk4 R32 - 3256lbs 2Door model
mk5 2.0 TDI - 3200 4Door model

Now what's the weight of a mk4 1.9 TD model ?

I probably did miss the point but I still don't see how double panneled is that much different than today's cars? Anyone explain?

For example, on most cars you can replace the outer part, or skin, which you can see. The rest of the door need not be replaced it it is intact. Skins are bonded to the frame.

cause itsa a lot cheaper and less time consuming to unbolt a few bolts then bolt them back up, than it is to prize the old skin off and weld a new one.

So its the same thing with bolts instead of bonds - doesn't explain the weight tho for sure

Now what's the weight of a mk4 1.9 TD model ?

Weight of mk4 TDI is at bottom of my last post as a reference point to compare to new model to the old, there seems to be about 300lb difference between each generation of Golf, MK1 weighed just over 1800lbs, much less than an Arosa.

acf8181: 2.2 pounds to the kilo IIRC, I'll leave the maths to someone else!!!

LOL - DOH !

That's what i get for scan reading, just assumed it was part of your signature text :D

mk4 TDI 150 2Door 1268kg
mk5 2.0 TDI 4Door 1452kg
+184kg

Therefore if the R32 raises its weight with the R36 by the same amount (180kg)then it is fair at this stage to assume the R36 might weigh as much as 1640kg.

mk4 R32 2Door 1477kg
mk5 R36 4Door 1640kg :-o

(Audi A3 2.0 TDI 1340kg)
