Not sure i'm in the right forum for this! anyways i'm getting my windows done nut as unsure of the "correct" percentage for the fronts, many people have offered advice but unfortunatly everyones advice differs!

What is the law regarding tinted drivers and passenger windows?

And should i therefore go the same colour all the way around as the fronts?

or the rear "3" darker than the fronts?

or the rear window as dark as i can go and then the four sides the legal limit?

Cheers

Paul

I was thinking of doing mine too, but i am just setting up my own company and funds are a little tight at the moment :( ,

I really like the look of a light tint all round (except front of course), the darker rears are best left to the No*a boys! :D

The trouble is that my father is running a light tint all round on his Jag, but its just not dark enough to warrant doing in my book, even he agrees he should have gone darker.

I dont want do it too light then think bugger i wish i'd gone darker!!!

Oh Gawd- i dunno

The FEDS aren't bothered about the rear 3 windows but the front 2 (driver and passenger) have to let through 70% light. On my black IBIZA I have midnight black on the rears ( cant see in at all) and dark smoke on the fronts (legal...just), and I haven't been pulled at all. My dads got the same on his black voyager and he doesn't get any grief either.

Blimey, I know your boss wont let you have another SEAT company car, but isn't that a little drastic? ;)

Got my windows done a couple weeks ago. 35% tint all round, though I was tempted to go for 20% on the back 3. But I think really dark windows only look good on dark cars, mines silver, which is why I went for the lighter tint.

If you've got a dark car then I reckon you should go for a 20% smoked tint on the front 2, and 5% on the rear 3. Nnnice! :D

Pretty sure the rozzers won't do you for that, all the guys at the place that did mine had 20% on the fronts.

How about Bright Red?.........

Yeah I reckon red would look good. Really depends on how much visibility you want, or need. If you don't do hundreds of miles each week then go for the 20% tint all round, or 5% on the rear 3 if you really wanna stop people seeing what goes on in the back.. :D

I don't know about Britain, but tints are a pet peeve of the local constabulary in NI, especially Traffic Branch...

The law in NI is as follows, I'd say Britain is similar if not the same..

Front screen must allow 75% AVLT

Anything forward of the B pillar (Front side windows) must allow 70% AVLT.

Depending on the AVLT when tested the penalty differs..

Between 10% and 30% AVLT is £60 EFPN and 3 points. Vehicle prohibited from movement till tints removed.

Between 30% and 50%AVLT is £30 FPN no poiints and a defect notice to remove them within 14 days.

Less than 10% AVLT is prosecution through courts and prohibition.

What most folk forget is that most cars already come with a factory tint in the glass and then they put on what they think is a light legal tint, which coupled with the factory tint takes them into illegal levels of AVLT. Factory tinted glass is normally already between 17-25% AVLT.

And rears obviously you can paint black if you like!

just to note the regulations apply for cars 85 onwards not that it affects that many owners here

If anyone can confirm the pre 85 regulations for front and side's i'd appreciate it ;)

* Motor vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1985:
* The light transmitted through the windscreen must be at least 75%.
* The front side windows must allow at least 70% of light to be transmitted through them.

this would explain where some confusion between 30%-70% has been recently as it's 30% tint allowed and 70% of light minimum

When i had my corsa i had limo black on the back and a slight (and i mean slight) tint on the fronts. Got the tugg a few weeks after i had them done, he got his light gun out to see how much light passed through. Anyways he said they were too dark and that i could have the fine or he could start peeling the film off, I took the fine option . He then went on to say "my bmw windows are alot darker thay yours haha"...W*nker.

Isnt anything on the front classed as illegal? Depends on officer as to if they bother to pull you i think

Well technically yes but the actual legislation is that you must have 70% visability here in the UK. So as long as you dont have more than a 30% tint you should technically be ok.

but you will find 90% of standard glass factory fit has a 30% tint on it already. it has been proven that some cars actually have more than 30% standard lol

i put very light tints on my vrs to be pulled by the old bill and they came in at 27% whooopss the rears came in at 7% lol

i was told that it really is pointless doing the fronts if you wanna stay within the law but its your choice but be warned they are clamping down on this ( modified cars only) as they seem to turn a blind eye to the rich in the fully blacked out cars ( rant over lol)

Hmm you may be right, there is actually a stamp on my leon windows that reads: tinted...

may be a bit of a giveaway lol

Yeah on my old car I had tints all round and the fronts were around 25% visibilty! Rears they didn't check but you couldn't see in.

They made me rip the front ones out there and then on the roadside or they said they wouldn't let me drive away. Gits. Luckily the previous owner put them in so I didn't lose any money on it.
