View Full Version : cambelt change at what mileage?
Have searched high and low and cannot find any information as to what mileage intervals the cambelt needs to be changed on a 2001 Ibiza Cupra.
Any ideas?

It actually says 100K, but I'm not going to wait that long.
All in the manual!

In 'The Car Knowledge' section on teh Top Gear web site, it says that VAG 20VT engines can snap their timing belts (same as cam belt I think) at 70 - 80,000 miles - so a change at about 60,000 would be safe I think.

From Seat the official line for a Leon was check at 60, 80, 100k, but must be changed at 120k.
Not sure who would be responsible if you followed their line of thinking and it snapped
100k or 120k! chuffin hell! thats nuts!

Question is, if it breaks and pops the engine within the 120K ar SEAT gonna buy you a new engine without making excuses?

The cambelt in my Leon was supposed to be replaced at 40k, but went at 23k! Thankfully I detected the weakness before it went properly and did lots of damage, but it was still an expensive repair. They sorted the whole mess out, no questions asked, even though it was out of warranty, at no cost to me (but had to put up a bit of a fight for it).
if it goes when out of your warrantee period it's your fault... (remember vectra's tensioners a couple of years back?)
120k is assuming inspections carried out at all previous ones from 60k.
mad thing is that it's about a £25 belt (from non seat reseller) and a tensioner it's false economy to 'hold off'
the bad bit is how much labour they charge... so get that done at a back street specialist - it'll be cheaper

That's what they tried to tell me, but I stood my ground and they fixed it for free.
was your leon out of warrantee at 23k?
Yes it was over three years old (but had v low mileage as bought it direct from Seat UK when it was a few months old).

irrespective of warrentee, I would suggest that as a statement of fact was given in the manual as to when the belt should be changed, as long as regular service was carried out by the representative body making that stement i.e. SEAT then as long as not malicious intent could be comprehensivley demonstrated on behalf of the claiment, SEAT would be responsible for failure of said component due to the non excession of the timeframe of recommended change.
Wordy I know, but if your given 'expert advice' by the seller through the manual, then it's not unreasonable to expect it should last as stated!
Not that i'm risking my engine....
