View Full Version : TCS, EDS and ESP
I'm about to buy a new Ibiza Cupra and I noticed that ESP is available as an option.
Does anyone know how good Seats ESP is?
Is it as good as the Merc ESP (I've seen 2 Mercs driving on a frozen lake, one with ESP one without. The one with ESP looked like it was driving on tarmac, the other one was sliding all over the place!).
I see that on the Cupra there is a switch to turn TCS on and off, is there another switch to turn ESP on and off or is it perminantly on?
Whats the difference between ESP and EDS?

I will give you an example of how good ESP is. I have a Leon Cupra, on the way back from the last track day as I got closer to home, I was still driving in track day mode.
Approaching a mini roundabout just as it had started to rain.
I pulled a sharp left of off the roundabout and found myself heading for a Bollard in the middle of the road.
With that, the power cut, the steering went all loose and in a fraction of a section I was pointing in the right direction.

As far as iim aware ESP wasnt available on Seat Ibiza Cupra's, unless its an import and maybe its a european option. http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/smile.gif
Anyway i drive a Leon that does have ESP, its quite good, couldn't tell you how advanced it is as i dont live near any frozen lakes http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/wink.gif
But in slippery situations, in the wet etc, it performs well i think, its my first car to have ESP of any type so i have no reference to compare it to.
The ESP and TCS are linked in the Leon, so if you have a ESP equipped Leon as i do, the switch in the centre console is usally marked ESP, turning this off decactivates the TCS also. In Leons without ESP, the switch is marked TCS.
I presume they would be the same, again though i'd check this specification i wasnt aware of ESP equipped Ibiza's.
ESP and EDS are different in the fact that you know ESP is the Electronic Stability Program, this stops the car from sliding of centre, and helps to corredct the car.
TCS (Traction Control System) helps to stop the car from wheelspinning, so creating grip in wet consditions.
EDS or EDL as its sometimes reffered to is as i understand it, (Electronic Diff System), im no expert but as i understand this feature, in conditions where Traction is lost, it works with the TCS help control the car, by unlocking th cars Differential, so generating more drive, it automatically reengages when grip is reachieved.
I hope thius helps somewhat, as i say dont take this as gospel, someone else may have a better description, but this is how i understand it to be.

As far as I am aware ESP is not a UK option on the Ibiza Cupra. However, www.seat-imports.co.uk, (http://www.seat-imports.co.uk,) do have this as an option on their imported Ibiza Cupra's. It costs 240 quid.

Yes, I have to admit I didn't see ESP as an option on the UK Ibiza but I will be getting one of the new 200bhp Ibizas from SJBSport which are imported.
Any idea why don't Seat UK do ESP as an option?

Yep, it's because "they couldn't fit the kit into the right hand drive engine bay as there wasn't enough space".
You guess is as good as mine as to how you can buy a right hand drive import with it on!
