Going to be taking delivery of a Leon Cupra sometime in the distant future :) and already looking at an MP3 solution for it :) I use portable disc-based MP3 player now which is good but the quality via a tape adaptor isn't acceptable for a posh Cupra ;)

So I came across this baby - check out:

http://www.pricegrabber.com/rating_getprodrev.php/product_id=552950/id_type=M/ut=d47d514ee7719329/

You can get it over here (for silly money of course - 300ukp odd)
so two questions...

1. Can I get this thing to control the CD Changer than comes with me car?

2. If I get a mate to buy me one in the US is it the same unit as the UK one (i.e. compatibility problems?).

This sounds (no pun) like just the thing for me - for those of you who ain't got into MP3 yet think about this - 20hours of GOOD quality MP3 on a single CD, plus a CD Changed = audio heaven :)

Cheers

Timbo

See the link, but basically

Lowest Price: $ 221.99

which works out at 156.009 GBP on todays rate. Ouch.
So a saving of between 120-140 GBP !!

F******** country we live in..

Worth thinking about isn't it? Cheers for the offer - will bear it in
mind just want to know about compatibility etc.. I dunno what the US Freq range is, or whether say, traffic modes work the same way. Will have to do some research!!

Found this helpful site:

http://www.uk-yankee.com/electronics.html

"Digital radios (car radios, Hi-Fi tuners) may not work, since the channel step in the UK is in units of 9kHz, while in the US it is 10. So your US-made radio may "miss" all the right frequencies. "

However, I might prod pioneer since their may be an easy way to switch between these modes (can't see them making diff. models when not cost effective)

I have a Seat Leon 1.9TDI and have had fitted the Kenwood MP6090 MP3 player. It is excellent (Bloody! loud) and really easy to use, the logistic of 10 discs worth of material on one disc is so Coooollllll!!!!!!!!!!!. Also the fact that it is black in finish means it suits my dashboard trim colour also so it looks like a factory install.

Kenwood do do another model(the name escapes me) but the unit I bought has recently come down in price. (I believe the latest price for this unit is approx £220)

Try http://www.mcs-direct.co.uk/ or http://www.locostcaraudio.com/ as these are the two companies I have used for upgrading my car. I have found they are very competitive on price and service is excellent.

With regards to the pioneer Head Unit controlling the CD Changer that comes with your car, I would doubt this as I believe the manufacturer of the Changer is Grundig and in all my seraches when looking for hardware in my upgrade I never came across any conversion kits for any Grundig products, but good hunting there may be something/somewhere I didn't try.

However I have fitted a Kenwood KDC667 6 disc changer into the same place as the factory unit. The aperture required a little modifying, ie, making slightly bigger. Other than that fitted fine.

If you are worried that you won't be able to take the unit with you to the next car forget it, as I enquired about the prices of the plastic bits I modified and they are cheaper than I expected so it is worth butchering them for this purpose to replace when selling car in VERY distant future.

However, if you still want the Pioneer unit they are still very good, I had one before this one and the amount of changes you could do to the ouput is like having a crossover in your head unit. Very fiddly but worth the effort as you can set things up very accurately.
