View Full Version : The Cupra PD160 is here! Pics and review inside
OK as the title states the Ibiza Cupra PD160 was picked up today.
We had to bid farewell to our previous car, an **02 PVW, our Ibiza Cupra 20vT. If someone buys this, please keep in touch.
Upon finally getting the keys and getting the walk round, we went on our way. Mum loves the instant power delivery compared to the 20vT, especially as it doesn't need as much work to get there. The delivery of power is very smooth, and can easily put you in the back of your seat. I drove it and found it so much smoother compared to mine, but in places it lacks the oomph that mine has.
The suspension on the car is much improved over the lesser models, in fact it feels just like an Eibach Pro-Kit setup (which I have to say is very well balanced, but for me is ever so slighty soft). The ride height at the moment looks awful, but hopefully with some pasty it'll go down.
Mum reckons the brakes are very good, but whenever I touched the pedal, it felt like it had no feel to it at all. It might be because it's still new, but I don't know!
The seats are nice and comfortable compare to my Sport ones. I believe they're the same shape but with softer cushions so you "sink" into them better.
The interior features red trimmings here and there as standard, but I cannot help but feel as a standard car that it's still bland. The optional SEAT Sport/Momo Race gear knob, brushed aluminium air vent rings, and the Cupra badge nicked from the old one have certainly brightened it up a fair bit. The Cupra still features horrible quality plastics that the other models have, and a very cheap looking leather wheel. It does have nice cutouts for your thumb which I feel was a nice touch, but come on VAG, stop scrimping!
If none of this makes sense, I do apologise, but I'm in a rush as I need to get ready for work, and a house party.
Anyway I have uploaded some detailed photos for you all to view. If anyone wants pics taken, or even bigger versions of these, let me know.

wicked tom!
looks a beast (i soooo want one!)
love the sig pic as well.
surprised what u said about the brakes, after looking at the size of those HUGE anchors! guess they are still bedding in though. The wheels look lovely.. wish those would fit on a mk3.
so you gonna bring it to the MK meet.. would love to see it in the metal.
oh and a house party... you lucky man.. reminds me when i was a student... sigh.. those were the days.

Thanks Stew.
I'm hating that sig pic, as it makes my car look lame. I might have to change it, or steal the Cupra.
Get ICR Brembos...they're cool enough, and only slightly smaller.
MK Meet? Doubt it. Mumsy probably won't let me use it as she knows how I drive the 130! I drove the Cupra and was wheelspinning it out of this little layby on the country road earlier...that shook her up a bit!
The house party is to celebrate Miss toXXin's best mate getting a job in Tenerife. It won't all be fun, there's an idiot that's attending that keeps on harassing her and calling her names. He also keeps on cussing me and my car...he has a Renault 5! :roflmao:
hehe.. i see what u mean about ur sig pic. u will have to do what cpufreak did and get a cupra front bumper.
this idiot at the house party sounds like a right fool, someone needs to put him in his place publically, words are always better and harder hitting than fists though... dust up on your wit and sarcasm :)
and re the MK meet, oh u will have to say thats summins broken on your car, and you HAVE to go somewhere (but not the mk meet, something which she will feel like she will have to say yes to) then pop down to us..... please... please... with icing on top.
 Very nice looking car Tom, shame it's out of my price range :(

Pirelli P Zero Nero; is that the prefered tyre choice of Seat now?
Forgot to add : Nice car, looks mint :D
nice car... nice pics... quality...
Nice One ....... Great colour too ... Go on Tom u gotta get one now .....
Stu, no need...I've only had this car 9 months and I'm more than happy with it. I'm waiting until I'm 21 before I change.
Anyway I'll see whether I can get "2nd user" insurance on it :)

Looking good..
More like how the Ibiza should look tbh.. I'll not be getting one due to my massive spending on the Cordoba! :hide:
MK4 - been there, done that, now gone back into the past ;)

Car looks good Tom.
I am sure the brakes will sharpen up.
I am dissapointed to see they havent done something abit better with the seats. I notice they arent putting the oil temp gauge or the voltage gauge on. Now thats cheap!!!.
Do you now what the gearing is like, final drive and ratios. Thats prob the only thing that would tempt me to get one over a sport as the gearing in the sport is pish (way to high). If its simila to the TDI Golfs then that would be much better.
BTW sure theres enought keys on that key ring...... ;)
Has the Cupra got the dark coloured back lights instead of the red? And can these be bought as an aftermarket product?
SBF, I'll try and get another decent drive to compare the ratios for you.
Mum's key set is a bit lame...you should se mine however, more keyrings than keys!
Grapo, I take it you didn't look at the pictures? It does have the "Lexus" crap style lights, and they're available at your local SEAT dealer for around £160. If it was my car, I'd change them to the red ones!

Very nice!! Nice house too
I think I have definitely been turned round to Platinum Grey.

Tom, can you expand on this for me please if you don't mind.
I would like to know how it compares to the 1.8T cupra mk3 she had before.
The power delivery of the mk4 ibiza cupra TDI i drove was the only thing i was not really happy with. It seemed to have very little go below 1800rpm then went off like a scalded cat at 1800+ upto about 4000rpm. The thing is i was the first to drive this demo car so it could just be single figure miles it had on or that one particular car.
After talking to a few friends they say this is how there golf GT TDI 150s are too.
I like the power deliver of my mk1 golf 1.8 gti, ibiza mk2 2.0 8v and the mk3 ibiza cupra. How do you think it compares power deliver wise. Is it smooth and linier?
Thanks
Geoff.

The explosion of power is what my mum likes...with the 20vT you have to work it up to get the power in, with the TDI, it'a low down and requires less work to get it there.
I'm at work now, if I remember I'll come and elaborate later.
Very nice. Although those rear pictures have just made me realise I have no idea where my exhaust comes out or what the tail pipe is like!

Left hand side with 2 puney pipes if yours is like mine! It should be exposed to free the soot!
Yea but u gotta love stock pipes aint ya......... hmm
Mines not an oil burner however soot is the least of my worries, someone could have told me what an arse (expensive) thing it is to keep a black car clean.
Anyway, back to topic.......

You wanna try yellow!
I nearly had yellow until my g/f said she'd buy me the Village Peoples album if I bought it..... personally I think the yellow looks alot more sporty. Only good thing with black is the mirrors like colour coded!

Ive been to my Stealer and he wouldnt budge off the £15500 list price and offered me peanuts for my tdi sport as a trade in. Then he said "ofcourse you know being a Seat dealer we will give you best trade in value for your car" Yeah right! I told him what he could do! :p

Bought it from Fishers, not new though. 1 previous owner. I live in Manchester. Sorry bout the e-mail, must get my eyes tested!
I'm not meaning to sound rude, but can you use PMs and emails for conversations rather than my thread?
I was hoping to keep it more for info rather than chat.
Hi Tom I noticed in the Auto Express test they say the cupra is pulling 2200 rpm at 70 MPH, have you noticed if the ratios are different to the 130 sport or is it the final drive. If I remember correctly mine is about 1750 at 70 MPH.
Oh and are the Seat sport brakes std, no trace of them in the options page on the Seat web site.
thanks
Im getting tempted you know
I can't say I noticed a difference...I was watching the road rather than the revometer.
The SEAT Sport brakes are indeed standard, I thought they were an option but they appear to be standard fit.

My Cupra just arrived today, it wont be ready until Monday. I called over to have a look and I am well pleased. The salesman asked me if I wanted him to get a strut brace put on it aswell so I thought why not, its for nothing.
Tom I will be interested to hear how you get on at Revo tomorrow
Hopefully Kev will be dropping it off as I get back from work, and hopefully it's a nice day tomorrow.
I'll let you know how it goes :)

How much they charge you for the strut brace?

Im getting it thrown in for nothing, but I think he said they cost about 70 pounds to buy.
Picked mine up yesterday, very pleased. So much better than the 130 i test drove (sorry guys but it is, though it was a 130 sport and not a newer FR).
Loving the larger turbo old fashioned lag and full boost which really picks you up and throws you forward, done 200 miles since yesterday so it's loosening up a bit but still keeping it below 3000rpm or so and can only get better. Economy has averaged 45mpg so far and seems to be climbing too.
Nice touches i've noticed so far include, a full size 17" alloy wheel spare (none of that foam or space saver malarkey), a proper slow speed intermittent that you can adjust to wipe about once a minute (first car i've had that has a properly slow speed for Scottish misty drizzle), and nice thumb cut outs on the wheel. Brakes are great and the performance is better than i'd hoped for. Like the colour coded silver mesh inserts too, look better than the black i saw on the yellow car.
Dash plastics are a bit hard, suspension can be a bit crashy as though the wheels are a bit heavy but it doesn't hurt the handling too much, and the stereo doesn't like MP3 CDR disks, only minor stuff though.

I notice they arent putting the oil temp gauge or the voltage gauge on.
That's what I noticed too! my mk3 has them so I'd expect a sportier car like the 160 cupra to have them too,,, how d'ya know when you can start to thrash it?
Anyway, IMHO the car looks very cool and has that something more that all the mk4's have always been lacking of.
Could you tell us something more about performance, particulary comparing it to the 130?
Do you know what are the differences compared to the 150? (turbo, injectors, IC etc).
Enjoy that great car you lucky mate!
the difference between the two is light and day in my oppinion though i've only driven the cupra and 130sport and not the FR which might be a half way step between the two. The cupra grips and doesn't roll where the 130 was wollowing and understeering. the suspension is hard on the cupra, almost as hard as the coilover kit i had on a previous car. The engine dominates the proceedings with real old school turbo thump and quite a lot of lag though it's nice to have an engine with some character and not just a power at all revs machine. It feels like a properly fettled motor, i believe it is based on the vdub 150 engine which has larger intercooler, bigger injectors and a bigger turbo, the 160 is tuned further and now has a a 19:1 compression ratio though they've had cars running 230bhp from the new 2lr engine so there is more to come with maybe a 200bhp diesel gti in the golf.

Good to know about the suspensions, tho the "real old school turbo thump" makes me think it's just a tuned 150 (which is known to be not at all a progressive engine). Old school turbo engines can be fun but just on sporty cars like the cupra. Don't think vag will use it on any other car. AFAIK this is the same reason why audi didn't use the 150 on their cars, too rough engine.
couldn't see the engine in a more sober family car as it is quite rough and noisy even compared to the 130tdi. The power delivery isn't audi like with nothing below 1800rpm an dthen peak torque coming in with a slam at 2K. Peak power isn't till around 3750 though so it dows like to roam up the rev range unlike most other oil burners. You can really feel the fronts scrabling fro grip as the steering goes light and that's in 3rd, i've not given it full throttle in the lower gears or got to the peak power just yet. Gave my dad a shot (he's got a 130tdi mondeo just now) and he was very impressed with the shove in te back but found it very uncomfortable with the crashing suspension, i quite like it that way though. he ws surprised you really needed to change into 3rd for 30limits and that it would struggle with doing less than 50 in sixth though, makes it easier to drive off boost when there is snow and ice around though.
looks like no locking wheel nuts on both wheel pictures posted, off to check if there are covers on the nuts now.
Tom,
Strainge question this but from Marshals of Bedford whats the first two letters of new cars reg plates. As we just ordered a new 1.4sx (eclipse blue) from them and we are wondering what the plate letters maybe.
Thanks

First two letters are KU ;)
Can be KN-Z...our old one was a KU and this one is a KO.
