View Full Version : cruse control
on the toledo cruse control system ive noticed the speed does not go up even though im going down hill my question is does the cruse control break the car and if so do my break lights go on (also this would wear the breaks quicker wouldnt it)
it depends on the hill ?
i have used one recently and found the same, it seems to use engine braking , but i havent fond a long STEEP hill yet

For as far as I know, I don't have cruise on my car, but when on my last holidays (USA/Australia) I had the luxury of getting cars with cruise control.
Now these were automatic transmission, but with these cars here the cruise control always brakes on the engine. When going downhill and accelerates going up, even shifts gears.
I hope this helps you finding your answer, but my question for you is since, I rekon, your car is a manual car how does the uphill work with your cruise control. Because the cars is not capable of shifting gears. So it probably makes more RPMs, right?
I wanted to know this cos i have a discussion on this topic with a friend of mine back here.
Thnx

ive not come across a hill yet that has seen the car drop below the set speed the system seems to pump up the gas to compensate and with 170bhp its seems to cope it gets a bit scarry as you can feel the power coming on and sometimes it feels that you really dont want to have the power on at that time perhaps a plonker has just pulled out infront of you so i only use cruse on quite motorways or dual carrageways yes there are a few roads left in devon and cornwall that allow this
fuel ecomony suffers using cruse
flapper thanks for input but if im in 5th going down a hill it cant see that engine breaking alone is enough to hild the car at the set speed
i see what ya mean , i think i need an extended test drive to figure it out !!BOSS!! BOSSS!!! can i have a big flash car for the weekend PLLLLLLEEEEAAAASSSSEEEEEEEEE :D
one thing i didnt like @ first is when you turn it off , WOAH scary
gets easier the more you get used to it , best to tread lightly on the throttle first
Having fitted Cruise control to my TDi now it was strange at first, its the feeling that it should slow down when going round bends, however I am now used to it, and feel it is excelent for towing at a steady 65mph, saves the speed building up, and I got better fuel economy.
As for braking, mine will rise by 1, 2 or even 3 mph depending on how steep the hill is, and how fast i'm going, but it doesn't apply the brakes. One way to test this is to switch it off via the stalk while going down hill, you'll find it will not make any difference, or even slow down more if the system hasn't reduced throttle to idle.
