View Full Version : Ibiza, noisey, rattle when under load
I've just brought a 99 Ibiza Cupra Sport and its developed a rattle and tapping from under the car that vibrates in the centre tunnel near the handbrake. I have had the exhaust checked out and it seems fine. You can feel the vibration near the hand brake when the car is under load. This is an intermittent problem, could this be a faulty catalic converter. Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

I had this same problem when i had a new exhaust fitted.
It is almost deifnitely the exhaust banging against the heatshield (which is situated in the middle of the car, right under the handbrake.) On a 20VT anyway......
Get to a garage.....have the car raised...and wobble the centre exhaust section about to see if it hits anything.
If so...you just need the echaust re-aligned so that it has enough clearance from the heatshield. Should do the trick.

My 97 Cupra 8v suffers from exhaust rattle on & off- the cylindrical heat shield apparently keeps coming slightly loose. It gets welded about every 20,000 in a generally fairly successful effort to get it to shut up.
Recently all this became slightly worse when K*****t made a pig's ear of changing the exhaust and fitted the wrong one.

I had a similar problem with my Ibiza. Sometimes the exhaust would bang under the car, sometimes it wouldnt. I took a ruler and measured the distance from the exhaust tips to the bumper with the car Cold and then when it was very hot and found out the exhaust expands almost 2 cm when hot. When you take the car to the shop, make sure you test it both with a hot and cold exhaust as the clearance varies.
