Anyone here (Saul?) able to help comment on how well their cruis control works?

I have just had this fitted and finished today, and am very dissapointed at how badly it controls the speed. It keeps accelerating and decelerating all the time to maintain the set speed. It made me feel car sick would you believe, just travelling 20 miles down the M5.. Ewww. Accelerate, decellerate, accelerate, decellerate....

It seems like it is hunting badly to maintain the setpoint..
The boost guage rises and falls rapidly as the throttle is being opened and closed slightly all the time. It feels orrid!

Is there a similar thing for the cruise control function as Adaptation for the throttle?

Anyone konw anything to help?
Its simply nasty at the moment.. I cannot believe this is as good as it gets from a manufacturer.

thanks
Bill

Cheers Terry.
Mines fitted by Amethyst.

I am wondering if there are other things to set into the ECU to make it run sweetly.

I am off up to Donningotn Park tomorrow to a trade show.

J6 you say? I 'll have to check my map book to see how far away I am going from that.

I'll send you a PM with soem contact details.
regards
Bill

You got it fitted by Amethyst!!!???

I ordered my Cruise control system from Amethyst before the Powerstation rolling road day (In fact it was due to be fitted the day before) but it never came in on time. I'm still waiting for them to let me know that the system is in!!!! Did you order your ssystem before me then Bill, or have you knicked mine? ;)

By the sounds of it your welcome to it! :)

Cheers Terry,

To be honest i can't actually remember how much Amethyst quoted me. I'm not really too bothered about it, its just another gadget that would be nice.

It'll be interesting to find out what the problem is with Bills... you don't have much luck with your Ibiza do you Bill? ;)

I think I ordered mine just after you Ben.. but I am local and have been pestering them ever since for supply. If you wanted to go this route give em a call or APR (they have done more of them)
Cost £200 from Amethyst.

Terrys APR'd Ibiza with cruise drove the same as mine, but a bit smoother on the accelerate-decellerate thing... but I suspect thats a difference between the Oettinger and APR software vs the standard cruise control, PID control parameters.

Mine seems too keen to accelerate (never thought I'd be saying that!) when on cruise, as the slight throttle spools up the turbo only to accelerate for it to have to close it again..... Motion sickness. follows this..

I was getting used to it, but the bumpy concrete M42 seemed to make it even worse. ??

DOH!

f#king cars!

Hi Bill,

I drove Jim Curleys APR Chipped ibiza and had a few miles on cruise control. I have to say that it was faultless, drove at a consistent speed, only accelerating or slowing when a hill was encountered.

I have mine (on a Leon) for about 15k miles now. Steady as a rock.

Thanks chaps.

Mine "hunts" for the speed set point, confirmed by my boost guage rising and falling with the constant opening and closing of the throttle.

I hope there is another setting which can be made to it to damp down the oscillations.. Or its going to be sick bag time soon.

Back to Amethyst again then.

cheers

Probably due to the boost spike. The APR car looks like it has the spike removed (most or all) judging from the torque curve. This culd account for the problem as the throttle is very sensitive and the engine spools up quick making it hard to control. It seems unusual how you can maintain smoothish driving with your foot though and the cruise can't. As you say the PID parameters are set with too much gain and not enough integral time to smooth small changes out.

Mine runs fine mate, doesnt hunt at all, only when theres an increase in gradient does it noticeably acclerate.

Sounds weird, have u tried setting it in a lower gear, say 4th, when ur above the "boost spike" range and seeing if that has any difference?

I have tried a few different speeds.
90mph (private road of course "cough") it hunts badly.
80mph same as above
70mph same as above
60mph seemed OK....
50mph (roadworks) hunted slightly.

I do agree with the comment about spooling up quickly on this particular chipped engine... PId aint matched right for this particular combo at all - :(

I feel

I drove an APR'd Ibiza (thanks Terry) and it did show similar accelerating/deccelerating, but nothing like as bad as mine. (smoother APR mapping eh?? DOH! there I go again.)

I have driven a Honda with cruise and it was faultless... and smooth. Mine is plain and simply nasty!

Hi
Mine was fitted as part of APR upgrade by Star Performance.
Uphill or down, it stays where it's set and doesn't vary at all.

Mine keeps the set speed, but it makes a real ham fist of keeping it there. Accelerate - Decellerate etc etc etc.

I have asked Amethyst if there are some other settings or readaption needed to sort it out... (not hopeful though personally)

Bill, if it is surging (boost) then surely the speed can't be staying constant? If it is staying the same speed then the speed input must be ok...

Well the speedo is'nt fluctuating much is all I can say...
the shove in the back on and off all the time is like motion sickness though...
Holding a steady throttle manually all is fine, but that is'nt the idea with cruise control is it.

It is truely nasty...and I don't travel well on boats which is what this feels like.

Eww.

Is your car fly by wire?
If not I think you may not be able to do this.
