View Full Version : The Next Ibiza
I have seen mentioned in a couple of places that Seat will be launching a new Ibiza early next year and as I was just about to buy an Ibiza I am obviously wonder whether or not I should wait.
I don't want to buy a new Ibiza now if there is a new and better one just around the corner. But equally I don't want to wait for the new Ibiza if its not as good as the current one... (For example, each new Golf gets a bit heavier than the previous generation = a bit slower and less fun etc.).
Does anyone know anything about the new Ibiza? Will it still have the highly tunable 1.8 20V Turbo engine? Will it still have TCS, EDS (And on import ESP), a trip computer etc?
Will it handle as good?
Will it look radiacally different?
Its probably too early to answer these questions, but if anyone does know anything please let me know (Any Seat insiders on this forum?)
Cheers,
Ben

I don't know too much about the next Ibiza other than it being based on the same platform as the Skoda Fabia, which I have driven and is rather good.
What I do know is that Seat in the past have held back with the performance versions of new models.
I bought an Ibiza Cupra 8v in March 1999, knowing that the facelifted models were due a couple of months later. Can't remember when the facelifted turbo finally came out, but it would have been one hell of a wait.

Thanks for the info... if a Cupra version is likely to come out a few months later then I think I will go ahead and buy the current one now rather than wait.

The motoring press have said that the current model has not yet made enough money. The new version is supposed to have been put back to 2003.

Interesting.... was it an official statement from Seat or is it a rumour?
Where did you read it, I'd like to read it myself.
One concern I have about the next Ibiza Cupra is that Audi have just released a 2 litre direct injection engine to repleace 1.8T in the A3.... therefore I wouldn't be surprised if Seat use this new engine in the next Ibiza Cupra. As good as this engine sounds, it doesn't have a turbo and therefore wont be as easily modable.

The 1.8T is supposed to be going in the Polo GTI when the new model is released. VW have also commented on the fact the V5 from the golf would fit the Polo engine bay. Sounds interesting for the next generation Cupra!

I'd prefer the 1.8T over the V5 as the 1.8T is lighter and much easier to mod. A similar example is demonstrated with the Leon Cupra4 with its V6 engine compared to the Leon Cupra R with its 1.8T engine.... the Cupra R is faster!

According to Car magazine, the new Ibiza is due late next year (autum 2002). I reckon they may as well hold out as I've just changed from a 5 series beemer to a new red Cupra amd it's awsome.

I really didn't like the looks of the next Ibiza very much.. But of course the Cupra version may look much better..
