My car is brand new.

1. Does the reverse gear has a synchromesh in the Ibiza's 1.8 20V T gearbox? Sometimes I find it hard to shift to reverse and to do so I shift to the second gear before shifting to the reverse!
2. When driving slowly around town in second gear and lifting up the gas pedal I hear some whining sound from the gearbox. Is that normal?
3. The gear shifting is somewhat clunky sometimes. I feel a hard spot at the end of each shift. Is that characteristic of a sports gearbox?
4. Will the gearbox "loosen up" with time and miles?

All of the symptoms you described seem to be normal. No need to worry. Your gearbox should loosen up with time.

The very first Ibiza cupra I test drove had 0.3 miles on it, and the gear change was notchy. I did think "oh dear" nasty gear change at first..

A few months later I drove Amethysts 210 before and after its conversion. It had about 2500 miles on it from memory at that time. The gear change on that one was super smooth and slick - very nice indeed.

I would say give it a few miles to settle in before worrying about it being crap. I'm sure it will loosen up shortly.

I'll be in the same boat in a few weeks now myself. its all going to be new and tight.

enjoy!
