View Full Version : 2.0l 8v tuning
where to start then.
got a k+n fitted when bought but piece of s~~t in my opinion. thinking of original airbox with panel and drilling.
does an exhaust do anything other than boom?
can u get a good cam for these engines? want something that give big midrange gains - not one for big revs.
would changing the exhaust manifold and or polishing the throttle body and inlet manifold make a difference?
any advice from people who've 'been there-done that' appriciated. 115bhp is not enough and neither is the lack of torque - used to a TDI.
Easy one would be a Shrick cam (badger bill will sort you out) ... about £300 or so , then a remap from Stealth .. £400 or so , that should see you about 150bhp .... torque is improved aswell etc..
Just a remap saw 136bhp on my 8v Gti and power delivery was greatly increased along with torque , was great fun ...
sounds good. whos badger bill?
Im sure he'll turn up .... his username is Badger5 (i think) ... anyone else help..
ibizacupra is bills username .... just saw in another thread. :)
he's on holiday for a week ;)
There's few ppl who've tuned their 8v to make 'big midrange gains'. Most of the tuning has been about getting more power period and in effect turning the 8v engine to perform like the 16v one.
the 16v i drove i found lacking below about 2.5k and then it really gets going where as the 8v pulls well from about 1300revs even in fourth. i drive a diesel day to day and don't want a screamer that needs loads of revs and has a lairy cam - been there done that with other cars and it becomes a pain in the ass day to day.
You could go for a capacity increase to say 2.1 or so. Most other ppl who've tuned their 8v have done the usual of filter/exhaust, P&P head with say something like a 285 Kent/Piper cam. That doesn't really get you the results you are looking for.
yeah thats what most tunning firms have suggested but the 285 cams i had in my fraud were far to lumpy - so bad i sold it to a proper chav with lots of burberry - he loved it!
mybe a supercharger would be the way to go? r throttle bodies worthwhile?
There is a supercharger available i think for the 8v .... isnt it a jackson supercharger from the US ? ...
no idea. new to the whole vag thing. does it need internal mods to make good power. if it does i'll got another engine first and then strip and rebuild that in me spare time. then stick the charger on that. maybe a 2.1 with a charger and cam would be good. lots of steel bits inside and a big pace cooler -
I believe you'll need the x-flow head to fit any charger of sorts
now i;m lost. i though x-flow was a ford thing.
Have you got a lot of money to spend then nerf ? ... :)
It's just a reference to the positioning of the in/outlet
always - not! but things can be saved up for. not in a major hurry to throw money at the car but just looking at options. parts can be bought cheap through work contacts (i hope - less VAT) and then fitted by me and mates to save labour charges.

I hear that if u de cat you can get good power gains. K & N air filters tend to be useless for power gains (make a nice noise though) unless done properly with heat shields and cold air intakes. Chips seem a little to expensive to be worth while IMO. Nice cat back system is worth the money for both looks and a bit of performance. The 8v is probably running at more than the stated 115bhp in its standard form.
Decat was done by one member and cat was put back in. If you want more power then a remap is probably better vfm than an exhaust tbh

A VW mechanic told me that decat would add 10-15 bhp on my car!? 16v though. Plus it would invalidate the insurance a little bit.
But does a remap come with nice shiney tail pipes? :)
It might well do, but it's not going to achieve what nerf wants for his car

 are we talking de cat or shiney tail pipes?
Both cos shiny pipes don't get you midrange gains :D

Lol
not intersted in bling - more stealth. previous car looked v stock apart from the 4 ots hiding behind the rims but had 50% more power and 33% more torque than stock. thinking of cage, buckets+harnesses and total strip this time - aka sallyrag!
