Hi this message is concerning my Arosa 16V, last year i owned a Y plate 16V for 3 months and during which time the engine speed sensor failed 4 times in 3000 miles, Seat fitted new sensors, new ECU etc and eventually backed down and gave me a new 51 reg car last september. Apart from the usual Seat water leak problem all has been fine until at 6000 miles the engine speed sensor went on this one also. I took it to my local dealer (SPUR garage in Hampton court) who fitted a new sensor. Then on sunday the smae problem happened again, this cant be co-incidental can it? 6 speed sensor failures in 3 cars? As this engine is used quite commonly in the VAG group i wondered if anyone knew of the problem and a possible cure, i hear the sensor is mounted on the gearbox and that it may be to do with the engine getting wet, the problem usually happens when its rained. Hope someone has some information as soon it may have to be traded in for something more reliable than a Volkswagon group car...and that means Japanese?
cheers
Dave

had an egine speed sensor go on my 2.0 16v cordy, wasnt much fun as it was in the rain too, so there may be a link thugh i had a new gearbox fitted only 8k ago and the engine had only done 26k , think you have been just overly unlucky with the same faults, i have had the same abs speed sensor in my front right replaced 3 times eventually before they swapped the control unit, has been fine ever since.

Dave,
my sister will give you £7500 for your Arosa :) or have you decided not to sell now? She's still on the look out for one, cant find any for a decent price! Second hand ones are criminal prices!
And have you got any of that ICE still for sale? I may be interested ;) I was gonna mail you and forgot....
Cheers matey.
Sorry but i will have to agree that you have been over unlucky as i havent had any problems with mine apart from the time i went from 3rd to 2nd while racing and every warning light came up.

P.S. Jap cars may be reliable but when they go wrong they are very pricey. Hope you have a big wallet if you do buy one
What exactly happens?
I have had problems with my Y reg Arosa 16V. In the rain or wet the engine would shudder and stall. Sometimes at 85mph sometimes at city speeds (25-35mph).
The only common denominator between all incidences was that the road was wet or damp and I was revving the engine quite high, either by acceleration or high speeds.
I took it into the dealer twice. The first time they blamed it on bad fuel and the second they blamed it on waterproofing. After the waterproofing I haven't had any problems. However, I don't drive on the motorway that often (I think this is where it occurs most of the time).
Where's your water leak?
Cheers,
Max

To max, my water leak was at the joint of the windscreen and bulkhead, when the sensor fails the car momentarily loses power and the rev counter loses its way and jumps all over the place for a couple of seconds, then it rights itself and all is fine. Next time you start the engine light is illuminated. there is something in the water theory though cause my old Y plate one only did this in rain conditions.
To modded cars matt, sorry mate all the ice is in the Arosa now, sounding very good too!! £7500 is right price for a Y plate in mint condition, i would want a coiuple of hundred more for being "51" reg but could not buy anything for that price anyways so its off the market really. Im pushing SEat for compensation now cause this isnt just being "unlucky" as some people put it, ive heard of more Arosa's doing this and this is the second ive owned that has done it. I have a guy at work who is german and has got someone contacting a technical guy at VW in germany to see if there is a problem with these electriacl sensors on the 1.4 VW engine cause it may be something Seat uk dont know about? So how come youre around a Seat forum then Matt, you drive a Lupo now dont you? hope your not dissapointed with the handling compared to the pug, i curse the Arosa at every roundabout and corner!!!
email me if you get the chance,
Dave
p.s can anyone give contact details and reccomendations for fitment of uprated suspension to the Arosa, interested in what brands to use and who to fit them?
Give RPM a call on 01823 664181 ask to speak to Graham.
Getting a set of Koni adjustables on mine once we have stock

I can give you the email address of a guy who's fitted the Koni Adjustables to his Lupo Sport, which is baisically the same.
Thats if you want to know what they're like, that is.
I do work for them yes. Price wise like i said give Graham a call as i'm not 100% sure as we are working out deals with different companies.
