View Full Version : tyre opinions
bridgestone potenza s03 on the fronts need renewing, they have not lasted well, which i put down to the new car feeling.
pirelli p6000 powergy are on the rear, bought in hast ,because when i bought the car the rears were illegal(only thing available on a sunday in shropshire).
has anyone had the pirelli's on the front with any joy?what are grip levels like bearing in mind the winter ahead.
tyres i have had in the passed on the two SEATS
bf goodridge profiler g
toyo proxi
goodyear eagle gsd03(i think)
uniroyal rainsports(i liked)
i'm considering leaving the pirelli's on the back and going uniroyal again,i know what to expect, how they wear and how great the wet grip is,i'm budgeting for about a ton a corner, tried wwww.mytyres.com and black circles, both in or around the 100 quid mark.
i'll stop waffling now :bleh:

Powergy are the harder compound variant of the P6000. Longer life, less fuel, less grip.
P6000s are not well received on here, or in the Alfa community. They are good at keeping the rolling resistance down and hence the mpg up. They aen't great in the wet and have an annoying habit of picking up small stones.
Lots of people rave about the grip of the Eagle F1s, but the wear isn't great.
I really liked the Dunlop Sport 01s that I had on the Golf - made everything very quiet.
Simon.
Jason,
How did you fing the Bridgestone SO3's? Been considering them but never spoken to anyone who can give a review !
Thanks.
ive got uniroyal rainsports on mine now jase, always been happy with em all expect the last 6 months since they went like slicks......
I dont want to splash out for tyres atm for obvious reasons, but if I do im looking at the Nankangs from www.mytyres.com , spose to be pretty good and vfm.
Jase, what size are you running?
What are the uniroyals like in the dry?
I will need to new fronts before the end of the year (currently running Pirelli P Zero Assimetros on the front = bad in the wet, and Pirelli P Zero Neros on the back). I was thinking about getting a pair of Pirelli P Zero Neros for the front (195/45/16) so I have the same all round and they are only about £57 each, but if others recommend something else like the Uniroyal (about £50 each) then I will consider.
When I ran the 15s on the car I used BF Goodrich Profiler G tyres which were good all round in all weathers and on track.
Don;t want hijack ure thread Jase, but all seems to be talking about the same thing!
Cheers
Ryan

not that good kam,one was brand new in july when i bought the car,but as i said, grin factor of revo and 20vt may have been the overiding factor in the shite, longevity
Jase, what size are you running? 205 50 17,standard vrs rims.
uniroyals are fine in the dry great in the wet.
gonna go uniroyal front and leave the shite on the back for 2 years.i did have an inkling they were pants up front.
at least here in Portugal the rainsports suck when it's dry and hot... :thumbd:
I was thinking of the pirelli nero's myself, but haven't heard anything about them.
BTW don't blame the wear rate on revo, the s03 just don't last long...
cool ,cheers paulo,offically off list.
inroyals must be a best seller over here then, very rarely dry and never that hot
trying not to hijack your thread, but has anyone heard of Nankang tyres?
just got offered a set of 4 NS-2 for dirt cheap .... :)

I like my uniroyal rainsports.
Round donington they were fine (18ish degrees outside temperature), with the levels of pasty I was applying; think kev commented they went off quite quickly roung the 'ring in the dry.
they're good value for money, and wear seems to be pretty good (10k and counting, and still plenty of wear to go).

just doing a search paulo ,but this maybe what brendy was belly aching about when he bought his cupra(appols if incorrect\)
Friend has S03s on his S3 - likes them a lot, but he hasn't tried Goodyear F1s yet. I have done 10k miles with F1s on the front of my Ibiza and they still have plenty of tread and that is with me driving like a knob. They are also a cheap tyre.

sorry just did a search for wet tyres wondering if theres anything better than the uniroyals ive used a few times,
my arse avche was with wan li's jase,
paulo if the nankangs are big time cheaper than the uniroyals then go for them, they are ok but dont last an amazing amount of time.
i need two new fronts as my rear bridgestone potenzas are well over half tread left, i think im going to go for the rainsports this time on the leon, hope there is a decent rim protector on them.
Hopefully they will last through winter and into spring until the drier weather arrives.

Not that its totally relevant to fwd cars but I was looking to swap to SO-3s for next year, they seem to get a good review by the Porsche guys. I think they will last longer then the toyos too.
P6000 are not great tyres, but last long and are predictable.
I think the toyos are pretty good, very grippy in the dry, apparently the new ones T1-R have better wear rates and wet weather grip, so they might be worth looking at as they are still pretty good value.
Someone on hear said the best place to get tyres is a site called topgear, I had a look and I can concur they have some great prices for mail order.
A good all round tyre I found was the continental premium contact, I use on the golf not a total hi performance tyre but pretty good all rounder, and superb in the wet winter months, nice ride and quiet.

I just bought 2 Nankang ns-2 for £119 all in. Thats 225/45/17. They seem ok, wet grip is what I expect on a budget tyre though, but not terrible. As a bonus they are quiet.
I recently bought 2x toyo T1-R for £140.. the S ones are even cheaper!
i went for conitental contact in the end.had a spare in the boot and my mate got me one ,they are pretty darn good, may stay with these, depends on the wear rate though ;)
T1-R's are good, bit noisy on some surfaces, but quiet on others, and the grip is  both in the wet and the dry. [B)]

As a slightly more "value" tyre than the GSD3 I was looking at had these recommended at 70 a corner. (GSD3 95 a corner) ... anyone met them before ???

Also looking for 2 new front tyres.
Have used GSD3's in the past, but now want something that's going to last a bit longer than these.
Looking at the Avon ZV3's (but was told that these are a soft tyre also), seems I can get these for about £80 a tyre all in though (same price as GSD3's).
Asked about Toyo Proxies, the guy at the tyre place told me that they start off on 5mm tread, whereas normally you get about 7-8mm tread, so if this is true I won't be getting these !

Also worth looking at Vredestein Ultrac's, just got a pair on the front of my LCR, I think ZBOYD has them too. They were highly recommended by my very knowledgeable tyre supplier... :)

I'm thinking of getting some of these on my car too, what do you think so far of them then? Any ideas how long they'd last on the car?
Also thinking of Yokohama's AVS sports - anyone tried these at all??

I'm not sure how long they'll last, that's a bit of a "piece of string" question IMHO, it depends how you'll drive. Bear in mind that my original Pirelli's did 20,000 miles!
I'm quite pleased with them, certainly grip well. I don't get anywhere near as much flickering from the TCS light when pulling away hard as I did with the Pirelli's. They seem pretty good. I paid £105 each for mine as a guide...

My F1's were great when new but a little worn now after 15k of use. The p-zero's lasted about 10k so guess this reflects on the country lanes I drive down every day but agree on the how long is a piece of string comment.
At the moment I just fancy a change to something a little different to the F1's which I've found to be the best tyre so far especially in the wet.
Right guys, I need a pair for the front of my 8v (195/45/16 V rated).
Have the choice of either
Pirelli P Zero Nero at £61.10 each all fitted etc (currently have these on the back)
Goodyear GSD3 at £73.50 each all fitted etc
What do you think is the best option, bearing in mind I mainly do town driving to work etc but also a track day now and again etc!!

I had to change the fronts on mine 17" 225/45. I went for Avon ZZ3 tyres at £112 each. 500 miles on and in the the dry they are like limpets, quiet and great in the wet too. I'd recommend them!!
I went for the Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3's in the end, £72 a corner. Still scrubbing them in, so won't be able to give a verdict for another week or so.
