View Full Version : LCR green panel v paper filter
No numbers to back this up,but rather impressed with the quality of these,i got mine locally, but bill sells em on here around £45 iirc,i choose this for being MAF safe(well as safe as you can be with vag mafs  )
Anyhow when i went to change filter (lcr has 20k change)mine had done 13.5k,but had @ service @10k (big up ted johnsons)they changed it on service although seat says 20k,so my stock paper had done 3.5k, was filthy and airbox was full of crap see pics.
The green fits really snug and has to be coaxed in it fits that well :)
tools req'd pozidrive, thats all 2x screws and airbox hinges back pull out old put in new, replace screws job done
car felt so much more responsive, there is another couple of reasons as well as i will come on to, TOP moD for little cash,i recommend u buy cleaner and oil @ same time and do this every 4k,to keep in peek performance.
CHECK THIS...
while you have your airbox cover off and filter out, there is a seal (rubber built in bottom air box) that seals airbox to cold air intake(cai)from front of car,my seal had come part way off,and was blocking around a quarter of the air inlet :-o ,see pic was worse than the pic looked tbh,i need a new airbox bottom,as seal is built in,made temp repair
some pics wont upload over 100k soz

Vern
Something like this I guess, the rubber seal on mine popped over the intake, blocking the intake and leaving a gap to suck nice hot air from under the bonnet in :thumbd:

Vern,
Cr@p in airbox is fairly normal, it's got to go somewhere if it doesn't go through filter.
Looking at it, I would guess that your stock filter had done more than 3.5k - I'm guessing that they didn't change it at the 10k service. I think you're comparing a clean filter with a dirty one.
Also, didn't you say you changed the TIP at the asme time - I thought there was more of an improvement with that than the filter. Talk to you tomorrow...

Phil.
He did change the tip at the same time, and granted they both compliment one another, sounds very nice now though.
Rich
It's just that I did my TIP first - noticed a real difference, did the panel filter later and didn't notice a great deal of difference. There is a difference, a small one, just not the drastic imporvement that Vern's suggesting - like I say, that's down to the TIP.
Some peeps are sticking with paper filters - just changing them more often (£8 each IIRC).
As for the noise - it does sound nice doesn't it

yep phil checked your right filter did'nt get changed, checked rich's @8k yesterday and that did'nt get changed on 10k service either,so more power from clean filter dunno, but imho i can see ppl using o/e one @ throwing @ 5k for cost/how easy it is,much as i am sure these work and i know i like the deeper induction growl(sucks like a mofo :D )a know this is down to tip,too though as well, just that the green is great quality and fits more snugly too plus a re clean and oil good as new every 4k for me,did not realise the shite that gets in em,this is not a paper v green fight, every one has there opion and in mine every little thing helps.
vern
I couldn't agree more - I think mine's great. I definitely would do it again - I just don't want people to think the filter makes a huge difference.

You have me thinking whether or not to cancel my order for my Green filter now
Stuuf it, I'll still get one, it's only money afterall

Way back when.. Dor and I did a back to back comparison on his Ibiza-R with brand new paper filter and Green panel filter.. (data has been lost from logging when my lapotp expired last year) but the Green filter did outflow the new paper one across the range, and with VAG-Com block #120 saw a 3bhp gain.. (not massive of course.. its only an airfilter, but it did flow more)
Exactly, five minute job, 3bhp (poss 5bhp). Why not? Not a massive gain, but a gain non-the-less. Mine breathes better as a result, hard to put into words, but it's more eager.
(Cue that other bloke...)
Just another point - work out how much gain you get per £1 spent on Revo/APR/Jabba then work out how much gain per £1 on the green filter.

just swapped my filter over the problem with the seal coming loose was the same on mine and the air box was full of leaves, car seems a lot smoother on tick over picks up a bit quicker as well. When you talk about tip do you meen turbo intake pipe and what differance does this make and how many beer vouchers does it cost, also i have had a full miltek system fitted which makes a great improvment.
Does the sound of the turbo, dump vavle etc sound increase as much as running an induction kit?

No mate, it's not as noisy as an induction kit IMO, it is a nice purposeful noise, which is hard to describe.

The point was really that it's widely accepted that peeps will happily spend 500+ to get an extra 30-50 bhp, but when anyone mentions that all you get out of a filter is 3-5 bhp then you gt lots of "it's not worth it" backlash.
If you do the sums, it actually IS worth it.

who  agree phil 3-5 bhp and nice sound to boot

You'll see improvements in performance with breathing mods before a remap, as well as after.

I will add...
My motor has only ever been mapped for 1.2bar boost many many moons ago.. It has evolved (read been buggered about with) significantly with no map adjustments since..
There are gains from when it was originally done.. as the latest dyno's indicate..
Used to be a Jabba 340bhp @ flywheel and now runs a JBS 325/330bhp @ wheels depending on day etc..
Seriously doubt the mapping suits the mods now, but have been impatiently waiting for the new dyno to be commissioned @ Jabba to properly setup and see where the map need adjusting to make use of the mods its received since being last mapped some 11 months ago.
Point being.. the ecu's will adapt for most bolt on bits and bobs and show gains... to the limit of the adaption windows.
Wilko's torque is very impressive (wondering about stock rods mind you for both of our engines ) and has some excellent REVO mapping done by Mitch.. which does the bizz.. Seemed to be affected by heatsoak more than mine @ JBS dyno.. (FMIC differences? or more ign on Johns than mine? dunno really..) I would say better mapping (better suited and more recent) on Johns than on mine...
Looking forward to a return to Jabba for optimising when new larger FMIC core (AM-Motorsport) is fitted combined with its aquamist, decat, '20 housing.
