I'm sorry if this has been posted (checked last 60 days and did'nt find an answer)
The Ibiza rear speakers are lame to say the least..Little jobbies in the plastic rear shelf supports.
Are better speakers available for this location (plastic and weak me thinks) or is the rear shelf the best location to get some ommmf and base from there? Fronts are OK(ish). I'm not after sound off quality ICE, just a reasonable rich sound.
Anyone been there/done that?
thanks guys
Bill

If you don't want to cut your shelf up, there are direct replacements available from most of the leading speaker manufacturers.
JBL do a nice set that I had in a previous motor. I think they are 6x4 ovals from memory.
Other than that add an active subwoofer to the system (Infinity bass link or similar).
Or do what I did and fit 2x 12" JL Audio subs and listen to sweet vibrations all day!
My car currently has:
Std head unit
Infinity 6.5" Midbass and 1" tweeters in front.
Infinity 693i's on rear shelf.
2x JL Audio 12W3 subs
Alpine Alpine MRVF407 powering Front and rear speakers.
MTX 1000D powering Subs.

Bill,
Guess what???? http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/wink.gif
Yep, been there, done that. I've replaced the rears with JBL 6x4's which screw in as direct replacements, although you have to lop the blocks of the speaker wires and put on standard connectors. It's made a difference, bass is definitely better.
If you take the stock ones out they are cheap and paper cones.
However, I don't think it will give you what you're after. Especially after the good quality Audi system you'd be used to. I'd probably hack the rear shelf and put some 6x9's and disconnect the ones that are there.
Hope that helps. If you want the model numbers of my JBL's then shout and I'll dig them out when I go home tomorrow.
Cheers

I would'nt mind the numbers of the JBL's you have and where you got them.
I changed my Audi to Inifinity Kappa 6x9 rears and was very happy with them. Sadly I've promised them to my mate who's buying the car. I just was'nt sure I wanted to hack the parcel shelf or advertise the fact I had better speakers in there anyway. At least under the grills JBL's will hide. If it brings up some rear base I will be happy I think. Mind you the Inifinities really brought up some deep rich sounds in the audi.
hmmmm.

Bill,
I'll grab the numbers for you. However, if you're in the area - I bought them in the Halfords on Eastern Ave in Gloucester. Next to the Pug garage. They were the only 6x4's they had so you should easily spot them. £49.99 for the pair which I'm sure you could beat elsewhere but I wanted to get them and do them that evening so I didn't look around.
As for your comments on the Infinity's, you certainly get what you pay for....that's why I'm going for them in the front.
Cheers

I posted up about the JBL's under the ICE section.
Topboss, is that the MTX amp that runs off the rear speaker wires?

To get around the lack of pre outs I have had to use high level inputs (not ideal by any means!!!). When I originally picked the car up the back ground noise was horrific and I told the dealer to shove it or get it sorted.
Eventually they sourced an Alpine high level input suppresser that does some weird and wonderful things to the signal before it is sent to the amp.
So..........I have high level inputs going through this Alpine suppresser. This feeds the Alpine amp that powers the front and rear speakers. I have then used the Preout from the Alpine amp to feed the MTX amp.
Back ground noise is almost totally un-noticable. Although this has worked well it has proved costly. I would advise all others to get the "alternate" dash board kit that allows the fitting of a DIN sized unit.
------------------
It's a shame the set up in the Ibiza isn't as good as that on the Leon.
My brother recently got a Leon Cupra and the std set up (excluding the looks of the head unit!) is very impressive. All it needs is a little sub (maybe an active sub like an Infinity Bass link) just to boost the low end output.
As some of you have already mentioned......the std set up in the Ibiza is.............####!
I'm surprised there wasn't an option for a Bose install or similar like on the Audi's.
I heard a Bose system in an A6.....it was extremely nice http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/biggrin.gif
------------------
Rather than go down the extremely messy job of changing the unit.
I think im goin to play with suppressors and line inputs and see how i go on.
Topboss, can u give me a run down on your system.
Im looking for inspiration, mainly what to run in the doors and use for amps.
cheers

Sorry, scratch that just read thro the posts again.
Topboss, u got ur tweeters in the "mirror" pods or sat on the dash?
That lot u've got sounds expensive, im looking at using some JBL components
saul
------------------
Tweeters are in the std mirror pods. I have had them angled slightly to improve the imaging though.
Infinity Kappa tweeters are a little sharp at times!

------------------
Did u do it urself or get them fitted as the door speakers require the whole card to be removed (gulp)
Do the mirror grilles pop off or do u take the whole panel off?
So many questions
------------------
Everything apart from the subs and MTX amp were done by a local place....... Car Electronics ( www.cel-direct.com (http://www.cel-direct.com) )
However, I think the mirror pods simply unclip. The midbass speakers are apparently not at all that nice to replace. Yes the whole door card has to come off.......and........the kind folks at Seat (on my car anyway) never just screwed the front speakers in, they decided to bond them in to the speaker locations using a basket/pod (presumably to try and improve the sound). Car Electronics had to modify this basket to accept the Infinty Speakers.
------------------
topboss,
What do you mean by 'alternate' dashboard kit?
There is/was a model in the current Ibiza range that came with a normal (DIN sized) headunit.
The headunit goes where the screen/display is. The screen/display is then repositioned in the recess under the air con controls (near ash tray).
As far as I can remember it wasn't a simple case of just swopping them over, there was little more to it. However the results looked more than worth it.
There was a member (dutchcupradriver) on the yahoo seat club site that had done the conversion. He posted piccies in the gallery over at Yahoo.

You have fitted JBL's right? Do they need running in? I bought some tonight and fitted them and they're really shite.. nasty cardboard things (the sound that is not the construction).. Very dissapointing. Wondered if they needed to run in a bit to sound OK.
And another thing...... The bloody front drivers door rattles with the base (such that it is) from the front speaker. !!!! I hate rattles and buzzes. Driving me mad! Passenger side is fine - non buzzy. Back to Amethyst tonight.
Maybe we could meet up and compare notes so to speak? I'm popping back into Amethyst Wednesday after work - approx 4.30pm.

Hey Bill,
I wouldn't say that mine sounded flat at all. I didn't expect them to make a huge improvement but it tightened the bass up in the back and that's what I needed. I'm thinking from your post you've either got a couple of duds or you need some 6x9's on the shelf instead to get you what you were expecting....
Mine are sounding better after a bit of a run in but they improved things straight away.
As for the rattles, mine's not too bad unless you go silly. It takes some fiddling with the settings though. This works for me -
Tape - Loud set to on, Bass 6, treble 0
CD - Loud set to on, Bass 1, treble 0.
The majority of the bass and volume comes from the front, I don't really hear the rears as such. If you fade everything forward you realise they do their bit but I think you've been spoilt with the great Audi systems. My mate had a TT, the BOSE setup in that was incredible...
As for meeting up on Wednesday, I can't mate, I'm going JetSkiing at South Cerney, we need to be there at 5:30 ish.
If Amethyst have to take the door panel off, do me a favour and take a photo of the speakers and how they're mounted. I need to work out what to do if they are bonded in rather than screwed in.
Cheers

I think you're right. Spoilt with my Audi and Infinities.. Ordered a pair of 6x4 inifinities last night from the url link posted in the ICE section on this forum. Only £5 more than the JBL's. I am probably expecting too much from 6x4 baby speakers compared to my Infinity 6x9 Kappa series.
Not sure how much will get done tonight, but if the panel has to come offI'll try and be there for some digi piccies.
Halfords said 14 day no quibble money back, so if they don't pan out I'll return them. I just am not looking forward to getting those fiddly little fasteners back off again. th eplastic pins are feeble and may well break off on me next time http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/frown.gif

Yeah, if you got yourself some cheap brand 6x9's they'd be better than a 6x4. They just aren't big enough to do the job. I'm sure some people on here could help in making a covered parcel shelf that the speakers hide under so they're less of a nickable target.

Oh and I've found some Optimax if you're interested. On the way back from JetSkiing we went through Cirencester, they've got it at the Shell garage there. Not too far from you? I wasn't in my car otherwise I'd have filled her up....

Cheers for the note re Optimax. I'll have to remember to go via there on my next trip.
The speakers are better than std, but still below my expectations. I am waiting for some inifinities to arrive in the post to give them a try, but I am not expecting too much with the size being so small.
It will probably resort to a pair of 6x9's in the shelf, but I am loath to hack it about at the moment.

I've just put two 6 x 9's in my shelf. I got some cloth from my local car radio shop and just recovered the stanard shelf. It looks like it did b4 from the top, so no one can see the 6x9's! It sounds 10 times better than it did standard.
So when I come to sell my car, I'm thinking I'll just get a new shelf. Anybody any idea's how much one is of seat?

I just resorted to buying a pair of Kenwood 6x9's as the Infinities arrived and I fitted them, and they too are dissapointing but better than the JBL's. Not what I wanted but what the hell. 2 x holes in the shelf here I come.. ! With the acoustic cloth to cover it.
If you are contemplating a speaker upgrade Flapper and Swinny, please don't even bother with 6x4's, you would be better doing a shelf with 6x9's as the conversion, anything else will leave you "wanting" more from the rear! (ohh err missus)

To all in case you don't realise - this is for the older shape Ibiza's not the new one....DON'T try to take the front speaker cover off, it will snap. Follow the door removal instructions from the main page.

On the Mark 2 Ibiza (96-99) u can take the speaker grill off without removing the whole door card, its the new shape ibiza's that need the door card removing.

I've managed to find the pictures that Dutchcupradriver posted on the Yahoo site.
If anyone wants the photos, just leave a message on here for me with your email addy and I'll send them over to you.
The kit was taken from a model in the seat Ibiza range (one of the specials like Ibiza cool/chilli etc).
Alternatively go to:
http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/seatowners
You will have to sign up as the photo section is a "members only" areas. Then simply click the title "ibiza 2001 radio problem".
It will be interesting to see what the Max Power Team do with their cupra in terms of the install.
