View Full Version : Cupra 1.8 20VT Dump Valve or Wasegate
I have a Cupra 1.8 20VT which has done 4000 miles and is starting to ccasionally loose power on gear shifts. From all the posts I have read it looks like it may be the dump valve. I have queried this with my local Seat dealer who says the engine has a wastegate not a dump valve, is this true or does he not know what he is talking about. Has anyone out there got the same problem with their car ? http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/confused.gif
------------------
I have also done about 4000 miles and while the car hasn't exactly lost power, the power tends to kick in a bit later on, say, 4000+rpm (very noticeable power surge). Car is totally standard. Not sure if it's a problem or not. Car going in on 22nd so will enquire then, unless anyone here can help. Similar post appears on Leon forum. A guy by the name of Mosser is experiencing similar problems (if it's a problem).
------------------
I have been getting the powersurge at about 4000rpm, mine is in on 21st, let's hope we get them sorted.

Wastegate/Dump Valve pretty much the same thing.
The Ibiza uses a recirculating valve.
It is only a crappy Plastic Bosch one.
This is a known problem on ibizas and can be rectfied with an ally FORGE item.
If your dealer wont replace under warranty.

Wastegate and Dump Valve are 2 complete seperate things.
Wastegate is this little thing inside your turbo....that opens up when you floor it...so that all the compressed air can fly into the cylinders....and closes when you take your foot of the gas.....
when the wastegate closes...the dump valve opens to let out any excess pressure still inside the turbo (because the wastegate is now closed, the air has no where to go!)...and so the dumper acts as a releaser so that the air can go out of the system..and not damage the turbo!!!
Sounds like your dumper is on the way out....if your local Seat Dealer DOESN'T KNOW the 20VT has a dumper....i suggest you find another dealer that does....cos that is really bad!!!!
Seat UK (or the whole VAG even) have replaced numerous std dumpers already...i suggest you buy a Forge item real quick.
As for the 4000rpm rush....thats when the turbo is running max boost and is fully spun up....thats why you can feel the kick.
You should feel it getting stronger and stronger from 2000rpm upwards....and then you get the hit!!

Chungster, thanks for response I fully understand what's going on now. I will quiz my Seat dealer again when car goes in next week and see if he is still unaware of there being a dump valve on the Cupra. http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/smile.gif

Hi Si
How are you nice to have someone in here from my neck of the woods. http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/smile.gif
Whos your dealer? If its Bells SEAT i can see where the problem has arisen from. http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/tongue.gif
They are not exactly a full can of worms i must say http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/smile.gif
Anyway nice as i say to have a local person, look out for me im in a Blue Leon Cupra, with a large spoiler on the back.

Mark, my dealer used to be Erskine & Calderbank but they have lost their Seat franchise. I am now having to use Bells of Hyde, the only other dealer close I think is is in Salford. Are Bells really bad or what
------------------
Snap Si I was also with Erskines, i was really dissapointed http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/mad.gif with SEAT on that score, the Leon was my second car from Erskines i'd been really happy with them.
I've had a lot of trouble with Bells, i dont trust them one bit, its taken them over a month to fix a traction fault, and in the end they didnt even realise they'd fixed it properly, tried blaming Erskines for it too.
Basically lied to me. Also other family members had bought cars from them, and been so disgusted with them, they went to Erskines instead for servicing.
I decided to give them a chance after Erskines lost their franchise, so i spoke to SEAT and asked them to take control of the fault, they basically breathed down Bells neck for me, but im not taking it back there, im unconvinced they have any knowledge. http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/frown.gif
Fortunatly there is another SEAT dealership in Oldham called David Cook, Saul a friend who posts on here you'll notice, has just bought a car from them, and been very happy.
Plus i was told by Shaun from Erskines and then Saul also told me, Lee who used to work for Erskines is now working for David Cook Motors, so hes a famillier face and hes already told Saul to tell me hes there and that he'll look after me. http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/smile.gif
So mines due for its first service this month, so im going to pop round to get it booked in soon.

Mark, what you say about Bells makes me wonder if I dare risk it.
I have two problems with my Cupra.
1). Heated rear window switch not staying on.
2). Suspected dump valve problem.
Oldham is a bit to far out for me so I think I will give them a chance. I may even just buy a Forge Dump Valve and do it myself, that just leaves them with the duff switch, surely not to difficult !!
Thanks for the offer of getting together for a drink, I will have to take a rain check as I am up to my neck in setting up my own computer business at the moment.
Cheers,
Si.

No problem Si, its only a offer of an invite http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/smile.gif
Anyway, Oldham aint that far, its about 5 mins up the new M60, easy mate.
Hope you get sorted.

Just to clarify...
The Wastegate is actuated to control boost pressure. When the max allowed boost pressure is developed (ECU controlled via the pressure capsule) the actuator opens the wastegate, wasting excess exhaust gas bypassing the exhaust turbine.
when closing the throttle abruptly following full boost, the inertia of the now excess boost pressure needs to be released or turbine stall can occur and the impellor blades are subjected to high loads. this is an internal dump valve on the VAG 1.8T (quiet) as opposed the "wooshy" RS turbo type !! You know what I mean.
Different jobbies as Lee quite rightly said.
Forge DV on mine works well, as does the 210 conversion. Exploring the cars handling envelope now http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/smile.gif Its needs some sorting me thinks http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/frown.gif

Have you driven it?
I am seriously considering the PSS9.
Danny was getting me a price... Will call them tomorrow to check.
I run Bilsteins on my Jetta, with Eiback front and rear anti roll bars and poly bushed suspension. Superb. Now trying to get the ibiza to handle as well. Too much roll for my liking and more power than handling now http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/frown.gif

Bill,
NOPE...they offered me one of the first 2 PSS9 kits to hit the Uk.....the chap who got the first one says its really improved the handling.
The eventual owner of the 2nd set has said the same.
RSD have sold about 10 of them by now i think.....and i'm glad you think it has too much roll aswell! I keep telling Tony that..and he keeps saying no its fine!!!
Its a lotta money....and is only worth it of you do quite a few track days year.
I think i'll keep it std until next year....when i might go for it.

As soon as I get my money for my A6 Audi, I'll be getting some PSS9's fitted. I think I better had or I probably won't have a straight Ibiza for long. Way too much roll, which is a shame as the damping is quite firm. Maybe a good compromise is some springs first to drop it a bit and firm up the spring rates. Anti roll bars would also help but I am not sure what size are on the front already. All this worked well on my old Jetta, and that handles very well.
