Hi folks,
As you all know to say the standard speakers in the Ibiza 1.8T are crap is an understatement.
I'm not a bass freak so i don't plan on a Isub but i am chainging the 6x4s at the back to MB Quartz.
1. Can anyone recommend any decent components for the front
I'm sure MB do a set but if anyone can recommend some others
then all the better.
2. I plan on keeping the standard head unit with CD changer in
boot and will go directly to amps with high/speaker level input.
Has anyone tried this and does it sound ok ?
Look forward to your comments
Marc

Hi Marc.
If you haven't already bought the replacement 6x4's I'd hold on. They will sound better than the originals (I replaced mine first) but they still will never sound great.
I have the original door speakers/tweeters and have replaced the rears with a pair of 6x9's. It's being fed by a little 50w Sony amp that's hidden in the trim under the cigarette lighter/ashtray. Original headunit and cd changer. Doesn't sound too bad at all.
I was going to replace the fronts but a possible imminent (well ish) LeonR purchase has put my plans on hold.

The standard fit in my 98 Ibiza TDi was fairly gruesome. First to go was the Grundig head unit- Tape + Radio only. I've replaced all the speakers with Pioneer custon fit ones, so they fit the grilles. Head unit is now a Pioneer single CD/tuner. About the only thing it's deficient of now is bass. I don't want to go to the lengths some do, so I'm just considering a new parcel shelf and some bigger speakers than the 6x4's. They're a bit weedy for the job.
I saw a small 4 X 50W Sony amp in Halfords which apparently plugs straight into the ISO connector of 'most headunits'. Is this what you've got Andy? Does it plug straight into the headunit?
I originally replaced the standard 6 X 4s in my Ibiza, which made a marginal improvment but it wasn't long before I junked them for some big 20cms in the shelf. Much better.

Steve:
Are you running your 20cm rears off the standard head unit or do you have an extra amp?
I have bought a set of Pioneer TSE-6995's that I plan to fit as soon as my stealth shelf arrives, and I was planning to simply extend the wiring from the existing 6x4's up to the new 6x9's using some decent cable and gold plated connectors..
I was under the impression that this should work, although I fully understand I won't get the full power out of the speakers, but I don't plan on driving the head unit that hard, and assumed the standard unit would at least cope in driving the 6x9's to a decent extent until I can be bothered to add another amp (later in the year).
Is it therefore possible to just extend the wiring from the old speakers to the new ones and manage to drive them sufficiently to improve the sound, level and bass response.. ??
Opinions appreciated..

Scoobz,
I've got a mk2 Ibiza so I have replaced the headunit with a Pioneer 50W per channel job. I have just extended the standard 6 X 4 cables to reach the ones in the shelf, using only the cable that came with the speakers. They sound pretty good (Pioneer 2065 I think). I did breifly have a sub but I got rid of it when I got these as they are good enough on their own.
I have ran Pioneer 6 X 9s from standard head units before and they make a massive improvement in bass (and volume) especially over the poxxy 6 X 4s.
I am looking out for a 20VT and so am examining my options for when (or if) I get one.
Cheers,
Steve

Hi Steve,
That's the one. I can't remember the model number. Plugs straight in and the speaker cables plug into the other. Neat and easy. (Well it was for Flapper when he fitted it ;))

That sounds ok then... I should be able to run my 6x9's directly from an extension from the existing cabling and they will be driven by the original head unit for now... until I find I want a new amp...
I am expecting that the present head unit will be powerful enough to provide enough oomph from the new 6x9's to give me a decent sound, plus the TSE6995's are suppose to be pretty decent and so should give it some welly..!! ;)
Just wish my damn stealth shelf would hurry up.. has anyone else got one of these from auto acoustics? how long did they take to make it and send it out? I've been waiting a week, and really want it soon, to get it sorted and get the tunage going.. !! :D
No Subs for me though.. need the space in the boot to put the golf clubs, and the suitcase when travelling, and I don't want a larger car just so I can do that, so will make do with no sub and just some decent 6x9's.. :)

Oh there's a very easy way around the boot space problem... £230 gets you a VERY high quality audiophile sub which only requires 8cm or so mounting depth. Which means you can have a very thin box on the boot floor...

Just stick it under the boot in the wheel space....
I'm not entirely convinced that any other cable apart from standard is going to make any difference to extending the neccesary lenth to fit rear 20cm Pioneers (got em myself - v.good)...gold plated connectors are not really worth the extra cost anyway for the lenth..the conductivity aint that much different to standard connectors.
