View Full Version : TurboDisplay
I was looking for an intake temperature gauge, and came across this, combined Boost, Intake and A/F gauge:
http://www.turbodisplay.com/products.html
What do you all think? I like the neatness of the design, and it saves having gauges all over the place, and the water injection feature looks good.
Have emailed the guy and he might do a group by, but as yet I'm undecided...
I'm going to be getting vag-vom soon, so do I really need a "real-time" display? Again, I was really only looking for an additional temperature sensor so I could (potentially) see the difference between the charge temp that the ECU sees and the "actual" charge temp (all related to the phenolic gasket thing).

Looks good to me but where would you put it?
im after a boost guage but i would like oil temp and intake temp as well

something along the lines of this..>> http://www.psi3.co.uk/seatsingle_vfd.html

previewed as son of one click
Not sure. One Idea was to drop the ashtray out, but that might be a bit low down to look at. Other idea I had this morning was that it might be small enough to fit in where the cup holder is, but I haven't measssured. Also, I've got two brackets - one for phone one for iPAQ that I could tack it onto.
Bit early yet, as I'm not sure I'm getting one...
Unit doesn't do oil temp, I don't think?

 Much, much cooler.
But it doesn't do charge temp, just the temperature that the intake temperature sensor sees (unless i misunderstand  ).
Also, it's a LOT more money... It would be "nice" to get real time display of all the bits and bobs off the ECU, but vag-com can tell you the same and write it to a log etc etc (and for safety's sake I'd rather log it, rather than drive down the road being distrated...)
Plus, where would you fit it...

Looks good and somthing i would go for but it all depends what it looks like! you can order it but not see it which is strange
I've ordered a TurboDisplay.
Mr TurboDisplay (Darren) has figured out the calibration of the OEM Bosch MAP Sensor so it should connect direct to it.
The charge temperature sensor is a new sensor to be fitted (comes with the display).
The A/F ration comes from one of the Lambda sensors.
I'll let you know how I get on.

how much di dthat set you back? ill be intrested in pics when your done!
Finally fitted it, in fact had it on for a week but because I wired it up wrong I've only had charge temp displayed (hey, orange and yellow are similar colours  ).
Now got boost graph, and I'm so impressed by its coolness, I thought I'd share...
Startup Video (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/p.revill/TurboDisplay/Startup.avi)
Action Video (Need Nokia Multimedia Player, sorry) (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/p.revill/TurboDisplay/Video009.3gp)
If you can't see it, top left is actual boost value, top center intake temp, top right A/F, then top bar graph is boost, next one down temp (only showing one block because it starts at 20'C) and bottom is A/F.
A/F Ratio not wired up yet, as I can't face crawling about under the car looking for the second lambda sensor. Does anyone know where it is, or even better where the wires run to into the engine bay?

Looks cool, if a little fuzzy ;)
Looks like it's up on the dash?, is it removable for security??
2nd sensor will be after the cat / s
Yeah, cheers oh fountain of all knowledge, master of precision, duke of directness. I know I'm being lazy, but exactly where? There's two cats on the LCR.
I have to tap into the sensor wire, and I'd rather do it inside the engine bay (or even inside the car) than under the car.

Maybe I should've spent the money on a better camera
Additional charge temp sensor Here (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/p.revill/2nd%20charge%20pipe.jpg) (bottom right, brass thing behind headlight).
TurboDisplay (can) also feature Water Injection control, so if I decide to do it I'll need to move the temp sensor closer to the TB and (hopefully) use the current temp sensor position for the injector.

 ;)
You should be able to pick the signal up from the ECU end, if you know the pin out of the ME7 ECU (something I'm trying to find)
the 2nd lambda probe is 'just' after the 2 cats, but should be pretty obvious as it'll be the only thing that's screwed into the exhaust pipe.
Yeah, I wanted to do that rather than run a wire all the way to the MAP, but as there's a wire for the water injection relay/pump that would need to be down there so it's "no biggy".
Wonder if Max_torque could get it?

have you got any photos as i cant view the vids!
R you happy with it then? i.e cost over effect?
So far, yes. It's been very interesting watching the intake temperature...
Pics on website.

.
Did you do a before and after the scoop? any differance???
The DBM? Not really (DBM went on before the TurboDisplay). I've not really noticed a difference in intake temp with the DBM - I would imagine that by the time the air's been mashed about (technical term - keep up) in the turbo, a few degrees cooler in the airbox is going to make no difference.
One thing I have noticed, and been surprised by, is how cold the charge temp stays when the intercoolers are cold - this'll be what everyone feels on cold mornings. When it's been frosty cold, the charge temp stays low for a good 10-15 minutes after the car's warmed up. The other day the outside temp was 3-4 degrees, but the charge temp stayed at 0 even after a good bit of provocation. It was only went I joined the motorway that it crept up.
I haven't seen above 14' all week - apart from when the car's been stood and the turned back on. Soon cools down though (fairly thin wall pipe).
I want to try and match the TurboDisplay to a vag-com log of intake tem to see if there's any/much difference. This should test the accuracy of the charge temp sensor, and might show if one of Bill's phenolic gaskets is as good an idea as it seems...

I ment fitted to your car!

 It's not exactly "fitted", more "velcro'd to the dash". I have skillfully crafted a location at the right hand side.

Is your temp sensor mounted onto the pipe wall then, not inserted into the airflow in the pipe?
I logged mine on the dyno last saturday, from a starting 27'C and 45 mins later after several power runs up and down, standing running on idle etc, it only crept up to 40'C. - Try doing that on a hot engine and log the intake temps.. Hot hot hot.. EVOshield was working well for me.. :)
No, it sits in the airflow. I did mean that the pipe cools down quick, but you've made me think about it again, and of course it's irrelevant
Not saying the evosheild doesn't work, 'cos it makes sense to me - just interested to see the different temperature readings...
I ment fitted to your car!
Here you go - not "pretty"

How big is the screen behind ? reckon its possible to remove from the metal bracket and fit into the car anywhere ....
Yeah - I'd got "plans" to make it a bit neater...
The unit itself is quite deep, probably 1.5 inches but I've asked him about splitting it into a control box and a screen.
The actual screen is about an inch bigger overall than the cutout in the front panel. The front panel is about an inch overall bigger than the unit...
I agree it wants to be smaller (it'd be cooler to have it as a head up display)

Looks like it would fit nicely where the cup holder is
lol - if you look up a few posts - I had EXACTLY the same idea...

Naughty, naughty that's 80mph.....not 70mph ;)
I thought the same, but my GPS shows 75.9mph, officer. :bleh:
I nearly blanked it out before I posted.
Also, the photograph was taken by a passenger in the back seat reaching round, before you start...
