I'm considering of buying a K&N panel filter for my ibiza cupra 20vt, but i am a bit worried about the MAF sensor problems these oiled filters could make. How many of you actually had broken MAFs using free flowing panel filters?

I was satisfied with the result in my 2.0 16v so i would give a try in the 20VT too, but i don't want to **** the (expensive) MAF up.

I have fitted an ITG pannel filter around a month a go, its been ok up to now (touch wood). I got told that it only goes wrong when you clean the filter and re oil it, people put too much oil on! you can get a new unoiled induction kit from K & N for our cars. check out www.starperformance.co.uk they are around £195. my ITG p filter was £40 from ITG themselfs!

I have the K&N filter. I have had no problems so far. Works well, the engine is far more free reving. It also seems to have eliminated all the hesitations during acceleration in chipped mode.
I'm very pleased all round.

Beware of running one of these dry, you will be amazed how much dust can find its way though.
I use ITG foam filter socks on my 16v modded Jetta, and unoiled they allow a lot of dust in... engine damage will occur and high wear on rings and dirt ingress to the valve seats will likely happen.

Be careful.

I did 105000 trouble free miles in 2 Scoobys with the same K&N filter, yet various people warn you to avoid them. Just don't over oil and the MAF sensor will be fine.

NICK...

Hesitations in chipped mode....what sort of hesitations and what chip are you running??

I have RSD Oettinger and I get hesitations when on max load, eg full throttle 6th gear 3k revs....

Haven't had time for the 3 hour round trip to RSD for them to look at it yet...

Mine is APR. They do recommend the K&N filter with the mod and it does make a difference. The effect was most noticable when coming on to full load, a string of short hesitations after the turbo had spun up. Completely gone now.

My R is still plagued with " Gremilins" , hesitating almost every time I floor it , I find I have to take my foot off and then slam it back down to get full boost :(

Sim:

I believe you have the SEAT Ibiza Cupra yes?

For the Ibiza the K&N panel filter is product code:

KN33-2172 (362mm x 133mm)

For the Leon the K&N panel filter is product code:

KN33-2128 (not sure dimensions, but bigger)

The delivery time from the states is quite a while, I am presently waiting for my filter for my Ibiza, as I originally got sent the wrong one (leon sized one).

I might try wiping some of the oil off the filter with some lint free cross woven non shedding pharmaceutical wipes (handy working in this industry)... will hopefully ensure that no traces of oil leave the filter and onto the MAF, so no failures.

Once I have run with the panel filter for a while, if I decide to keep the Ibiza I might look at the K&N induction kit as that looks nice (mmmmm stainless steel).

I am actively looking at selling my car in the next few months and buying a new Leon Cupra R.. !! hoah yehman.. so don't wanna do too many mods at the moment on mine.

Hope this info shows you have ordered the right filter @ Sim.. if not then cancel the order quick and get the right one.
