View Full Version : Oil
Any suggestions for the best brand/type of oil for a 20VT???
Cheers
i reckon u leave it well alone and stick what they give it at service. there are plenty veedubs out there with way over 100-150k still running happily with only ever getting regular servicing to prolong life. why spend money on service then drain off perfectly good oil and spend another £25+ on oil that may not make piss of difference. u could ask them to fill engine with mobil or something but are u gonna watch them do it, u'd need to or it might end up in some crappy nova with oversized wheels http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/biggrin.gif

It never hurts to give the car a regular oil change, even if they are Veedubs http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/smile.gif
Especially Turbos, cause they tend to turn regular oil to soup pretty quick
I change mine usually every 4000-5000 miles, though cause the Leon has only done 6500 miles so far, ive only change it the once to Mobil One, though its now due for its first service anyway, so the dealership will redo it.
i used to do the same with my Ibiza, as i say it doesnt do any harm.
Its easy enough to do yourself, get a oil drainage container, make sure the engines cool, otherwise you could burn yourself (important safety tip) http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/tongue.gif
No point in changing the oil filter, thats done at service intervals anyway.
undo the sump plug wait for it to drain out, you could again also do an engine flush, but probably best left again for service intervals.
Put plug back in (another important tip) http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/biggrin.gif
then Fill up with oil to the recommended amount, you'll find this in your manual, usually 4 Litres Max, but make sure you check it.
Dont be a prize muppet and fill the engine to the brim, believe me ive seen it done. http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/tongue.gif
Mobil One or Maganatec are recommended.

Zboyd,
What rating of oil do the beezers take? Mines comming up for a change a 5k and unsure.

Flapper should be able to give you the proper ratings.
But i use Mobil One which OW-40
but i think 5W-40 is acceptable too.

hi, are you supposed to have an oil change every 5k?, if you are doing high milage does that have an affect on what you shound be doing with oil changes?
dave

No not really, if the service intervals say 10000 miles then thats usually when you'd change it.
But it never hurts to clean out the oil sooner, especially if you enjoy right footing it a bit http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/biggrin.gif

what i meant by my reply was that if a car can run for 150k plus with only the stated service interval change then it is not important to use special oil etc as even if it is a turbo then the dealer will use approved oil for the motor at change. it is purely a personal choice for any extra changes. my interests are more in slick50 etc and whether they actually perform any use in real life http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/smile.gif

IN my opinion the service intervals are too long, and really if you cahnge the oil say every 6 months or so, your flushing out crappy deposits that sit inside your engine.
Though they wont do it any harm in the long run, those deposits can cause higher fuel consumption, and less performance.
And i like my performance to be tip top, again its personal preference and choice.
The normal service intervals suffice, but i think you can do your car the world of good, by giving it some fresh oil every so often. http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/smile.gif
Slick 50 im unsure of, i used to have it in my Punto GT, didnt really do much in my opinion, maybe it would give the engine more life in the longterm.
All i know is the oil that came out of my Leon after only 6 months was closer to black water than nice thick viscosity oil.
And that was the stuff it came with http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/tongue.gif
The Mobil One a couple of months after was still clean looking on the dipstick.
Like i said not essential, but i think it can't do any harm http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/smile.gif
