SEAT Toledo Launch Report (http://www.carkeys.co.uk/launches/seat/5447.asp)

Pretty much as we all thought - good car let down my poor looks (mostly due to the back end) and being too similar to the Altea which i imagine is a fair bit cheaper. I don't expect to see to many on the roads TBH which is a shame, SEAT could have and should have done a lot better

Autocar this week say much the same, why buy it over an Altea, its ugly and its certainly not sporty.

...hope SEAT know what there doing

Seeing as they plan to only import a limited number each year and have projected quite 'modest' sales, I think they might have a clue... but I certainly think they should have thought long and hard about the effect the new Tolly may have on brand image....

Have to say I'd also buy an Altea over this, a slightly increased bootspace will never compensate for a back end as ugly as that. Reminds me too much of the new horrible Renault rear ends, I'd never drive a car that ugly even if it was given to me! Hope the new Leon doesn't follow this path.

I was thinking SEAT rather than SEAT UK. The Toledo European wide, particuarly Spain and Portugal does rack up a fair number of sales

Looked at one today.

The back-end's not that bad, wouldn't call it ugly. But if it's an Altea with more luggage space (sort of Altea Estate?) I'll say the following:

Boot floor is too high - extending the car backwards means the threshold is about four inches higher than the Altea's, which is already a bit on the tall side.

Boot opening is pretty good, but the boot itself is very narrow. There seems to be a lot of space lost in the arches/trim if you catch my drift.

I have to say that the point of the Altea is a bit lost on me - nice car, don't get me wrong, I just don't see what it gives you over a "normal" hatch. The Toledo I don't get at all. If you want a huge boot - get an estate, or MPV, or if you don't want a huge boot get an Altea.

So, they'll prolly sell tens of thousands of both then

Yep, fair point. Forgot that SEAT sell cars outside of the uk...
That rear just reminds me too much of the ugly, ungainliness of the Focus saloon... Or the Scorpio, that thing where you could land Harriers on the bootlid...

The Altea sort of (IMHO) misses the point a little, but its the Toledo I dont get either. Problem is in six months or so time, when the new Leon comes out. If the scoop photos on the other thread testing are correct (and I have no reason to doubt it) then....

Altea - sort of an MPV, but not like a Scenic or Picasso the class leaders. I suppose it looks slightly sporty as an MPV?
Toledo - An Altea with a Boot, and not a pretty one. Saloon buyers are tradtionally conservative bunch. Mo hint of sportyness!
Leon - An Altea with Alfa rear lights and roof lowered by a couple of inches. as it looks like an Altea, its not really sporty for a hot hatch?

Surely all thats going to happen, is the Leon and Altea (and the odd Toly) are going to steal sales from each other. Leon is easily the best design, but they really should have been more vairety....unless they have other models up their sleeves

Andy you have missed out the Toledo Vario - Remember that picture... we discussed, some months back with it possibly being the new Alhambra, but I didnt think it was big enough, plus I thought Seat where going to drop the Alhambra anyway....

Agreed dont see the point of the Toledo - But maybe the Toledo Vario .... Now I could look at one of those.....

Toledo Vario, oh yeah, I remember that. Interesingly Spy shots of the new Sharan were in Autocar a couple of weeks back IIRC. I wonder if a SEAT version will appear

On the "Altea - what's the point" issue (and I really thought I was going to get flamed) maybe SEAT have been quite clever, maybe they realise that MPVs are going to be trendy, maybe the new 4x4, but as they generally cost more they've gone in with an MPV look-a-like that's cheaper?

I would say that SEAT are making sure that their cars don't cut across anyone else in the VAG group.

With the old models there was a straight forwardish comparison between

Golf, A3, Leon
Bora, Octavia, Toledo
as well as Arosa, Lupo
Polo, A2, Ibiza, Fabia

Well I can't see any one comparing the new Toledo to the new Bora or Octavia

That way they don't steal sales across the group and if you dont like the new Toledo, you go Bora or Octavia, VAG still get a sale and they also have a car to appeal to a new customer - Also, if they can move you to VW or Audi it means more profit for them !!

When I first saw the new Toledo I had hopes that it'd be Mini-MPV like the Touran, but with more character and a bit sporty. Now I've see it I'm not impressed .

Ugly
Not Sporty
Limited spec (Top spec comes no where near V5).

When I replace my V5 it'll probably for a Zafira 2.2 or 2.0 Turbo. :(

I dont like the New Toledo, much prefer the one previous (yeah ok im biased as i have one) but the new one is bigger, uglier and wont sell too well IMO.

Like the Toledo i have, it was not a bad seller to start with, then the Leon came out, which is much more in demand as its a hatchback. Then the Toledo sales took a bit of a dive. SEAT seem to have lost the marketing plot these days.

I reckon my next car is gonna be a last shape Tolly. I know as i've just bought my 1st house i'm gonna be a while off buying a new car again, also with the miles i'm putting on my car at the moment (approx 40k per year) my cars value will take a hammering. Been looking around (just out of interest for now) at the last shape Toledos - seen some 04 plate TDI SE's for anywhere between £8.5 - 10k and a couple of 150 TDI Sports for £11k ish. They seem to loose their value quite badly in the 1st few years - probably even more so now the new shape is out.

Wonder how much it would be to put a Leon Cupra (MY03) front end, skirts on it, drop it a bit and some nice wheels. Saw a nice one on here last week i think and it looked stunning

I have the sport wheels on mine, they make a lot of difference to the way it looks, and the TDI SE has the cupra suspension anyway so its lower.
