View Full Version : Cheap sound deadening..

There has been a debate for quite a while on how to sound deaden a car without paying the high cost of Dynamat. I know people on here have enquired about what they should do so I thought I'd post this..

I have been pointed towards the use of flashing tape ( Stop giggleing at the back there... ). You can get it from Homebase and a few other places. It looks like a roll of tar backed aluminium ( strange brown bread / dynamat is similar.. ) Now this stuff is apparently only £20 for a big roll..

I know someone who has spent the weekend putting 4 of these big rolls in his A4. He's been able to do the whole car and in most places given it two layers. The boot is entirely covered and you can no longer see the metalwork.

The results are amazing to say the least. Because he got the whole lot for £80 he just slapped it on everywhere and because of this he has covered all the most important areas. Road noise is much lower, all the panels have a very nice thud to them and his tunes sound sweeet.

The only downside is that it smells a bit more than the proper car deadening. But once all the panels are back on that isn't a problem.

So if you want to use the stuff get down to the DIY store and have a look. I'll be using it in my next motor for sure.

Pete,

I can vouch for this as I have done exactly the same thing!!

I bought the dynamat from halfords for 20 quid (4' x 0.5' roll). I took it out the packet to have a look at it and realised that it really is just roofers bitumen flashing with 'Dynamat' written on it!! Well in my opinion anyway :-)

I took the overpriced dynamat back to halfords and headed straight for b&q where I bought a big feck off roll of said roofing flashing for 11 quit (10metres X 0.5 Metres!!) This has covered all of my door panels with loads to spare. It is a bit smellier, but as you say this smell goes away when the panel is re-fitted.

I plan to do more on some of the other panels when I get the chance!!

That dodgy TMC (The Motorists Centre) chain are doing the Dynamat roll for £14.99 in my area.

Another tip...
If you`ve got a big cavity to fill (ooer missus) and its been waxoyled like the rear quarter panels on my beeza.
Spray the panel with dynamat spray or similar.
Doesnt need to be a thick coat, just enough to seal the waxoyl.
Then buy some cheap high-density foam from your local dodgy dealer on the market.
Hack it roughly about with a bread knife & squash it in any gaps or cavities you can get to & fit the panels back.

Hey presto!
Nice tap-it&its-dead, sound proofed panels for about £30 for both sides.
Easy, quick & cheap - spend the rest on more toys for the car or down the pub!

Took your advice and used flashing tape in the boot, have no complaints whatsoever. Did the job well enough and it will be going in the doors next weekend if my components ever turn up !!!!!!

One coment to make is that B&Q is cheaper than homebase.

Can`t believe i missed this cheap option to begin with, maybe it is aswell i`m about to finish uni, I appear to have lost my student bargain hunting skills.

I'm sure I posted about using this stuff a few months back :) B&Q is deff. a lot cheaper than Homebase :)

Terry - very bored at work, waiting for 4:30 to arrive so I can kick the little buggers out of here, why did I say it was a good idea to open the IT rooms after school? WHY??????

Erm, ok, deep breath has been taken, I'm calm now.....

I saw this post a while back, and just thought I would revive it and ask a few questions! I just bought a big roll of roofing felt (10 quid from b&q)..this is aparently the same as roofers bitumin, is this correct? There is no silver backing though..not sure if that makes a difference. Just wanted to make sure before i hack it to pieces that its the right stuff!

Also, has anyone soundproofed the firewall to reduce engine noise? Or have a good tip for that?

Cheers,
Greg

Ah right..trip back to B&Q then hehe.
Whats the difference between roofing felt and flashing tape? Is flashing tape like roofing felt, but with a silver backing? Does it stick?

How long ago did I post that lol

Actually I've changed my mind recently and I'd say go for Dynamat xtreme if the funds allow, it is much better than flashing tape.

Having said that the flashing tape is cheap and better than nothing at all ;)

if you can afford it dynamat extreme is still one of the best but if funds are short flashing tape is very good.

ive used a roll of flashing round my front doors and side panels, only bad report is that if you get a small dent in the panel, its a pain in the arse to get fixed.

I've got 5 rolls of dynamat extreme in my car and fair enough, the stereo sounds better, but it made naff all difference to road noise  which was the reason for buying it!

I've got 1 and a half rolls on each door and 1 roll on each rear quarter panel so far. It must need every sodding panel done to make any difference!

I think you should send some to charity.
Post it to: Garth's Loud Ibiza Charity......

garth, for road noise you need to do the floor under the carpeting. sides aer only good to stop panels distorting music frequencies i think.

What about for eliminating engine noise? Would putting flashing tape over the firewall make a big difference?

Also, sound deadening the boot..does this make much difference?

Well, I've now done my boot with Dynamat extreme as well and the difference is HUGE! Can't hear the exhaust anymore. The only place the noise seems to be coming from now is the engine. Noisy induction and f$%^ing heatshield rattle!

All the noise seems to be coming from the front right footwell and behind the dash above it. Gonna get busing trying to dynamat that area this afternoon to see if I can quieten that down as well.

Did you get round to soundproofing the firewall in the end? Would be interested to see how it turns out. I wonder if Dynamat/flashing tape is the best thing to use for this..I noticed manufacturers use a kind of foam sheet, I wonder if this would be better? I was thinking of the same kind of stuff they use in studios. http://www.soundservice.co.uk/ has got quite a few bits..

I've just used flashing tape on the front doors today..since I was putting in new speakers anyway. But I still have some left over, so not sure where im gonna use it next..prolly the boot. Did using Dynamat stop much of the rattling when you have the sub on loud? It seems the rattling mostly comes from panels in the front, as opposed to the boot.

I should really know all this having studied sound engineering :p

I've put a little bit in the drivers footwell, but not much. I started to take the bottom of the dash to pieces to do the firewall, then I noticed how shagged my pedal box was :( I took it to the garage and I've only got it back after 1 week!

I stuffed loads of foam up behind the dash as I get it from work. That made sod all difference though.

You really need to pull back the carpet and do the floor at the front, but that's a big job, and I don't have time at the mo.

Doing the boot, rear quarters and doors has eliminated all rattles caused by the sub.
