Can any of you experts help? I've wanted to turn my standard mk1 golf gti into a turbo'd beast for a couple of years now but not had the funds to do so (driving company cars). With the sale of my co. car imminent I will have a budget of £7 to £8000 for a full conversion,(susp, d/train, eng, brakes etc) which has to be the 20vT.
What conversions would you recommend?, bearing in mind I would not be doing any of the labour (mechanically useless!).
I also have a concern before I embark on the project:
1. The car would have to have coilovers, is it possible to set the car up for everyday use even though it is likely to have hardened bushes etc?
I want 16" wheels on it but will go down to 15" if it makes that much of a difference.
Or am i better selling the golf and getting a Seat or mk4 golf.
Many Thanks. :worship:

cheers mate. Think Dubsport or Awesome are the nearest specialists, but was wonderin whether it is cheaper to source various parts, i.e. IHI + man, wilwood 4 pots, etc rather than go for an S3 conversion?
I'd still goto JBS, they're getting a very good name for conversions lately
i dont think awesome want to bother anymore in conversions, that was andys line anyway, more trouble to him than they are worth
jbs recommended here
most coilovers are damping adjustable so for road use ,can be set for our wonderful britsih roads,15's with say 50 profile tyres will be more comfortable then 16's on a 45 profile.poly bushes i've never used but read that they can be harsh, but may be better than 1979 mk1 golf ones that are shagged

If JBS can fit 1.8T into Lupo, then Mk1 would be easy peasy.
Not the cheapest place for installation but certainly one of the best...

From what I've seen of other peoples attempts I'd say JBS too. But then again I always do
Another question though, what condition is your MKI GTi in? ie you're not going to spoil a perfectly lovely car are you? :(

The body is in good condition but needs a little bit of welding but the rest is a bit old and tired and begging for a major conversion.
Can't ever sell my baby so i'll just have to keep building her up until she's matching dubweisers' mk1 speeds (which may be sometime!)
i dunno which i like more. a mint original gti or a mint modifed gti.they both make me smile for different reasons i guess

For me you couldn't beat a nice clipper kitted mk1 with a nice pearl paint, i'm not one for mk1's without the kit and not keen on the retro look either. I would always have power over poise though and would be very happy with a standard looking mk1 packing a 300+ bhp IHI conversion.
