Hi

What a weekend.

Yesterday spent all day fitting new race-spec flywheel and clutch and then 02A gearbox - those of you who have tried to fit a gearbox to an ibiza on your back under the car will appreciate that this is not the easiest of tasks especially as the 02A is just that bit too heavy to strong-arm into place and you have to use jacks / cunning / swearing instead.

I had previously done a trial fit on most parts - as some had to be fabricated - and pretty much the only thing I hadn't done was torque the flywheel up - this was trial fitted with some old bolts and just made tight rather than the 90Nm that is required when fastening for real - reason for this was that new bolts are stretch bolts and can only be used once.

Well I got the gearbox on, all bolted up, all mount bolts done up tight and thought I'd call it a day.

This morning got up and thought I'd try and turn the engine over by hand before fitting driveshafts and ancillaries - just to check (anal person that I am). Well what a good job I did check - the engine wouldnot turn over - tried it on the starter - nope, wouldnot tune over. BOLLOX.

Fookin gearbox got to come off again so got it so far off - just far enough to disengage input shaft from clutch plate. Tried to turn engine over by hand - nothing, wouldn't budge. Well that means the gearbox is ok.

Having a look about and flywheel looks awefully close to the tin splash guard that fits between block and gearbox - figure this must be the issue. So remove gearbox from car completely with lots of cursing - RevoKev arrives and erns pastie points for assistance. With gearbox removed, remove clutch and remove flywheel. Pray engine turns over by hand............and it does, spins over lovely.

So - when trial fitted, flywheel was fine, engine would turn. When torqued down to 90Nm, there was insufficient clearance between the flywheel and crap guard to allow the engine to turn - now thats close tolerances !

Crap guard has now been modified and all is going back together again - gearbox refit tomorrow night.

Damn cars. Still, as was said on American Hotrod last week, Hotrods dont just go together.....no they Fookin Don't !

Ave it

i feel your pain rob,
just today i washed the car
chamoised it dry
picked off tar spots
put alloy gel protector on
colour wax on and buffed off by hand,
zymol cleaning wax on, well rubbed in, would it come off to leave a shine...did it frig! even with water sprayed on.
so eventually got it off (bonnet alone 25 mins)
more colour wax back on to try and get even shine again.

thats the last time i try to give the car a really good going over in coldish conditions.

Nothing ever ever goes together like you think it should.

Thanks for +ve comments - yesterday was a bummer, bad day, still know whats wrong now and just need to fix it.

New engine ate old gearbox first time out after proper setup - old box was 020 'rod change' type. Thus, decided to fit stronger 02A 'cable change' box - as used on turbo's etc - which should take the strain just fine - not just a simple swap though as clutch, flywheel, shifter, etc are all different. 02A as std has a very heavy clutch and flywheel setup, so me being me decide to fit a full-on race job. Very light - but needs custom bits to make fit - and thats where the time and patience is needed. I'm learning patience slowly.

When done, it will be a beast - bonnet is off presently (I wouldn't have believed it is as heavy as it is) so not sure its ever going back on again........maybe pasty wagon will never again venture onto the queens highway..........

Right - back at it tonight. Clutch and gearbox fitted in 2hrs, mounts bolted up, starter motor fitted. Learnt a lot from the first time - wasted probably 30mins getting front engine mount in but got a trick for this now so in future, gearbox fitted in 1.5hrs I would say.

Pretty pleased with myself. What a difference a couple of days makes. Finish the job off this week now hopefully. All turns over easy by hand now - just as it should be.

Big thanks to Mrs T for garage assistance - not many missus would help fit a gearbox !

Good news it seems.

Best of luck and engineering judgment on the final re-construction.

I have all this to look forward to do I!? I have a pasty supporting girlfriend at the moment with no need of gifts... but I see that changing soon after hanging around with you lot especially as I got her started on shiny stones at Christmas

Your car is getting better and better Rob! I will have to jump in as passenger one day just to see what you can do with a bit of patience and a fairly deep wallet

One day soon the Golf will be running again as a bit of a toy to get my hands dirty... none of this plugging a laptop into it rubbish ;) I'll have to invite Kev down to give me hand removing my gearbox to see how foooked it really is... bring on the warm dry weather I say!
