Hi All

The following relates to 'ADB' type rod-change gearbox found in 1.8 16V GTI Ibiza's.

Std ratios are: CWP(3.66), 1(3.45), 2(2.11), 3(1.37), 4(1.03) and 5(0.85).

This is not a close ratio gearset - why Seat has done this is beyond me, especially on a supposedly sporting model, and is a collection of ratios not found in any other VW gearbox I have found info on. Other examples: (CWP=final drive ratio)

16V VW GTI close ratios (AGB and 2Y codes):
CWP(3.66), 1(3.45), 2(2.12), 3(1.44), 4(1.13), 5(0.91)

8V VW GTI close ratios (4Y, 9A, ACD and AEN codes):
CWP(3.66), 1(3.45), 2(2.12), 3(1.44), 4(1.13), 5(0.89)

Have just changed mine to a 3.94 CWP and 3/4/5 from the 16V VW box.

It has made a huge difference - I highly recommend this to any 1.8 16V pilots out there - do this even before you do engine mods.

I would be interested to find out if other 1.8 16V gearboxes have the same code as mine - ADB - its on the end of the casing near the passenger side wheel.

Cheers

Rob

I think either of the std VW close ratio boxes would be better the std ADB-type. Cost - anything from £50-£500 for the box depending on if its been rebuilt or straight from the scrappy. Perhaps £100-£150 fitting. However, be aware that the 8V has a different diameter input shaft than the 16V and thus would need a different clutch friction plate. As the 16V has the larger diameter shaft, it is probably stronger.

The downside to doing the above is that both these boxes still have the longer 3.6 final drive ratio. To change this you are talking about a gearbox rebuild almost. This could be done at time of rebuild (£500 above) but will add £250-ish to the cost of the scrappy box along with the cost of obtaining the 3.9 CWP - mine was from the scrappy (actually bought another whole box for £50).

So - either way I would think £500-£650 should cover it and if your clutch may need changing do it at the same time.

And if you are rebuilding the box, may be an idea to save up another £500 and put quaife ATB diff in at the same time.............

And, and and......

Cheers

Rob

ps - TSR would charge approx £1500 for the same job without the LSD !
