View Full Version : Warped Discs
Reading an earlier Ibiza thread, it was said that worn/faulty CV joints could warp front discs. (http://www.seatcars.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5201)
I have recently had my CV joints/drive shafts and gearbox replaced under warranty but have now got warped front brake disc/s. Any info on this scenario would be welcomed.
Thanks in advance,
Warped discs are usually cuased by lots of excessive braking and or poor quality discs.
Not personaly come across or heard of discs being warped by drive shafts and CV joints, but I wouldent say it is an unlikely cuase as the vibration will be transmitted via the discs as they are clamped between the wheel and the hub flange.
So its new discs for you then uless you can be bothered to see what the runout on the discs are to see if the can be skimmed, and also get the vibration sorted as well
Stu:cheers:
Cheers Stu,
I would have thought warped discs would more likely wear the drive shafts etc rather than the other way round.

That can happen as well too as warped discs can cause as much if not even more vibration, its very hard to tell which is the cause of the vibration rather than the effect, its a two way street so to speak,
Is your steering wheel vibrating at all under braking (small rapid side to side movements)??
Yep, it shakes when lightly feathering the brakes at speed and lumps when pulling up to a halt, both symptons of warped discs.
I'll whack on some new ones and pads.
What are your Zimmermans like Stu?

Woooooo!, me dad remembered to pick up the discs today, and look rather cool with the Xdrilling, just got to source the pagid fast road pads and can fit em
pictures to follow shortly;)

It's usually cheaper to just buy new discs than get old ones machined. Bear in mind that machining them will take them much closer to the minimum thickness and hence substantially shorten their life... I guess if you have access to a lathe and are confident to do them yourself then fine, but for most of us new discs are the way forward.
BTW, re: xdrilling - did getting standard Zimmerman discs and having them drilled work out cheaper than buying Zimmerman xdrilled from GS&F? Who does all this machining for you Stu???

Quite true, but if the disc is fairly new and has enuff meat on it then it can be done, but its more economic just to replace the discs unless you posses a lathe and the tools to do so, it was just a thought anyway

Didnt bother enquiring about Xdrilled zimmermanns as the machining costs very little or nothing to me personally.
The machining is done by www.hispecbigbrakes.co.uk who will Xdrill and or groove them for around £30 a pair of discs, but I got the discs done for £40 for all 4 discs;)

That ain't much of a bargain when you look at the GS&F catalogue mate - but if you got a set of four machined for £40, that sounds like a deal :)

Just because they don't list them doesn't mean there's nothing suitable. Thanks to these funny little Spanish motors being a bit VAG parts bin bonanza, there's many parts that may work depite not screaming "I am for an Alhambra" on the box.
Just yesterday myself and Mark Phelps measured up a set of 1.4 Ibiza brake pads against a set of mk1 Golf GTi ones. While the Ibiza is not a recognised application, the silhouette is the same and I reckon they'd work a treat. My only concern would be about the pad and disc thickness as his Ibiza uses solid 239x12 discs as opposed to my Golf which has 239x20 ventilated.

The joys of the VAG parts bin:) can see where ur coming from, but not in the case of the Alhambra as it only shares the same discs with its VW & Ford counter parts and nothing else, here's the proof (http://www.brake-eng.com/Web%20Catalogue/Brake02/955645BG.htm) and yes it is correct :p ;)
as for getting parts for me Seat, I got wise along time ago as VW specialists dont wanna know if its for any other VAG Marque, but if ya know ya stuff on what ur car has the same fundamentals with the equivilent VW ur sorted!

Bit of a generalisation there m8! As a 'for instance', I have found the staff at my local GS&F to be very helpful. Despite not dealing with many Seats they seem quite clued up on what will work, and if they don't know they'll look into it and try to figure it out. Top guys.
As for the Alhambra discs, I must say that i'm surprised to learn that the discs are a freakish thing used only on Alhambra's, Sharan's and Galaxy's. It's very unlike VW or Ford to use an item on only one model (and let's face it, a relatively 'niche' model at that) in their range - but I guess you've done your homework and found this to be the case.

Indeed GS&F are a top bunch of guys, they saved me a lot of grief when my battery packed up at GTI and supplied a charged battery with discount; excellent service and on the ball, would recommend them to anybody:) but it its a great shame other competitors dont follow there lead such as Euro Carparts (Idiots;)) and a few VAG part specialists round my area who wont help full stop.
I was also surprised to learn that the discs did not fit any other model, but considering the popularity of the vehicle in whatever guise, there shouldent be a problem getting replacments or have problems selling them, one type fits all makes much more sense than countless varients
heres a pic of a front & rear disc

i want to replace the pads for the rear brakes but having problems dont know what to do nexttook wheel of and had a look at the calliper how does the calliper undo i would be gratefull for any help
Somebopdy used the search facility, top marks!
From memory you need to disconnect teh hand brake from the caliper, then undo one of the 13mm bolts and the caliper should pivot off the pads.
You'll need to use a caliper wind back tool to rotate the pistons back apon refitting.

You'll need to use a caliper wind back tool to rotate the pistons back apon refitting.
With the hand brake off you should be able to remove the caliper without removeing the cable, the only thing is that you then need to remove both bolts and lift the caliper clear of the discs in order to replace the pads
and before you wind the piston back in clamp the flexy brake line and undo the bleed nipple to allow the excess fluid to escape, dont back flush it through the ABS valve block :-o back into the master cylinders reservoir !
With the hand brake off you should be able to remove the caliper without removeing the cable
Which I'm 99% sure you can't.

thanks a lot stu your help was very much apprecaited and i hope it works

Well according to the Haynes book you can and I have done it! twice so far!
I was'nt aware that there was a haynes manual available for alhambra?
what year is yours?
95/6 There is a Haynes for the Galaxy that covers the MK1 version up to 2000, as there are only slight differences across the three models, Ford, Seat and VW you should find it's of some help! the other useful thing is a copy of the Ford TIS CD :) this covers all models of the Galaxy up to present day and is the official Ford workshop info system, link this to a copy of ETKA and you have most things covered  how to and what you need to do the job :)
