View Full Version : oil pressure
ok fitted my oil pressure gauge
quick Q
at idle on cold start up pressure is 6-7 bar
after 10 mins gentle driving it is 4-5 bar at idle
after giving it the gun it drops to 2 bar at idle
( normal driving once warm sees it between 4-6 bar-whilst driving/in gear)
is this normal could this indicate the oil used is ok or needs changing for a different grade??

Dont know if iam correct but my thinking behnind this would be:
On start up the reason you get 6-7bar is because of the raised idleing. Mine idles at 1200rpm when cold. So once the car is warmed up a bit the revs drops and pressure drops. Not sure why it would be at 2bar after gunning maybe oil thins and less back pressure maybe.

did you need to fab a T piece for this gauge as i have a oil pressure one but have not connected it yet as we were told we would need the t piece to fit it as there isn`t a lot of space where it goes
i fitted splitfire boost and oil pressure gauges [B)]
also why would 1 gauge be brighter than the other as they are wired together to the same power supply

no didnt use a T peice(i broke mine)

That's perfectly normal. Oil is thicker when cold, hence high oil pressure at initial start, dropping down as it heats up.
VAG spec for oil pressure is with oil at 80'C, hold RPM at 2000, you should have minimum 2 bar oil pressure.

no didnt use a T peice(i broke mine)
so how does the oil gauge fit on are you doing a guide for us thick people :hide:
did you have to go under or can it be done with just the bonnet open
buy the way how did it go on without the T piece
yep can be done with just the bonnet up
i suppose i can do a guide
correct size washer is vital when screwing the sensor in. they will also act as a spacer as well as to help seal it. there is a deprssion for the washer to sit in. i used to washers ue to the thread on the sensor being longer than the thread on the blanking plate that was in there. I used ptfe tape and hylomar blue gasket sealent on the thread. and hylomar in between the washers.
washer size is 10mm internal diameter not sure on external but if u dont get the right size it wont fit in the depressin :thumbd: I think its about 15mm external
to get to the blanking screw in the box take off the plastic cover directly in front of the inlet mannifold
there is a metal bracket under this use an allan key type bit to undo this(2 screws)
remove the sensor plugged in under the manni first(its the one in the way)
under here u will see another smaller metal bracket there are a few wire secured to this in a plastic clip. and also a connector slid on. slide of the connector and disconnect it. then take the 3 wires out of the plastic clip thing.
at the right of the metal bracket you will see a nice bolt to use your 10mm spanner on remove this being carefull not to drop it. remove bracket and under neath you will see a blanking bolt with allan key bit hole in it.( i used a rachet with the allan key bit rather than an allan key, carefull you dont roud it as its in tight!)

If your oil is thinning out too much when it gets hot, then it's time to change to a better quality oil... and I don't just mean the 0W30 / 0W40 grading... I mean quality overall...
I mean, I could go out and spend £10 on 4.5l of 0W40 from a motor factors for instance, or £50+ on 4.5l of 0W40... provided I'm not getting a mega deal on one oil, or being ripped off on the other, you can assume that, although the oils claim the same grade, that the more expensive one will be better...
I understand that you're still using the Qualtum oils in your car, whether regular, silver or gold... maybe it's worth changing to the likes of Castrol SLX or Mobil 1 at your next change to see if the hot pressure still drops to 2bar?
Part of the reason I'm getting oil temp & pressure gauges fitted at some point is to make sure that the oil I use is up to the job... the other so I know when the engine's warmed up, and if there are any oil supply problems...
the only problem is ive had bad expriances with changing oil
on one car i put the best stuff in and had oil seeping out of the rocker cover!
changed back to the normal stuff and all was fine.

I've changed the type of oil used in all the vehicles I've run - never had a problem.
quick guide
1. shows where to unscrew plastic trim
2. where i tapped in to FPR
3. drilled in here to fix the boost sensor. nice and out of site too
Arrows show where to unscrew the bracket, and unplug sensor
square box shows where ive routed the oil pressure wire.
circle shows to unclip hose
1.10mm bolt- dont drop this!
2.slide electrical connector up then unclip(note u will need to bend back the part which this slides into to stop it fouling the oil pressure sensor)
3.oil pressure sensor(normally a blanking peice here shown in second pic)
4. unclip 3 wires
dont forget to check the difference on the depth of thread between the blanking nut and your sensor! u may need to use more than one washer as spacers
heres a pic of the gauges
Just to add htere is a bit more to doing this on the cupra compared to the cupra R- more bits in the way but more fiddly than difficult
Did any oil come out when you took the blanking peice out?
Also I take it if you want to fit an oil pressure and temp guage you would have to t peice where the sensor goes in.
Cheers
no Oil comes out . and yes

no the oil would have to travel up. would leak out with the engine on though.
yes youd need a t peice for oil temp and pressure

I am running Motul lstuff now in mine 15W60 grade
100% sheer stable for consistent oil pressures they say.
When I get round to fitting my gauges I will see for myself.
smells nice tho.. LOL

extremely fully synthetic.
Their Race double Ester based oil.
