View Full Version : Removing Autoglym remnants

Now that the weather is getting better, it's looking like I might be able to get out and play with the Swissol I've had since Christmas!

I started trying to check how easy it was to prepare the surface last weekend, and found that the Swissol cleaner fluid was still leaving a 'cloudy' smear behind; I suspect this is the remnants of previous coats of Autoglym Super Resin Polish (presumably a silicone-based product?).

So, I tried Autoglym Intensive Tar Remover (basically a solvent?); that works ok in small areas, but on larger areas just seems to end up moving the old polish around (without *vast* amounts of rags and elbow grease), resulting in the same 'cloudy' smear.

Is there an easy way to get back to pure, clean, paint finish?

You could try a clay bar to remove the top layers, and try again. Meguiars do a decent clay for about £13.

I don't think clay bar takes off wax/polish, not sure about the Meg ver though.
Perhaps you need one of the stronger cleaners such as medium? I find the lowest strength to be a little too gentle sometimes.

Just to finalise this, I finally got around to doing this last weekend, and went for the "*vast* amounts of rags and elbow grease" approach, which seemed to do the trick.

Swissol cleaner fluid seemed to get it back to pure paint (how squeaky  ?!), although I've no doubt the stronger medium stuff would have been easier. Then a good coat of Saphir later, and it's looking superb.

Of course, then what did it do the next day... rain!

Yeah but wasn't the beading satisfying!

True, it was very impressive!

I'm hoping that a simple wash this weekend will be a quick and easy affair; splash plenty of water around, and watch the dust/dirt just fall off...

OK.

Best of luck with that!
