I am a real rock bottom novice when it comes to electircals. Seen a lot of mentions of scotch locks of this forum, wonder if someone can fill me in as to what they are. Do they do the same thing as soldering but better than twisting wiles together and wrapping witth tape?

Do they come universally or do different power ratings require different types of these things?

Finally, are they available through Maplins?

Thanks.

IMHO, I really think they're sh*te mate, keep with proper connections and a decent set of ratchet crimpers!

Here you go.

Maplins (http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=1073&TabID=1&source=15&WorldID=2&doy=22m3)

Not used them for a while but they always seemed OK to me.

Edit: It would appear that I am in the minority :hide:

Just decent quality crimp connections.

Use good crimps or soldered joints. Scotch locks IMO should be avoided as they have a tendency to fail.

Can't beat soldering and heat shrinking IMO.

hear hear - and sounds daft as well to add

make the repair/joint plain to see unless it is on show as it will save some poor sod in 5yrs time a real headache

do it once - do it properly

Yeap and if you dont have that!!!

If you absolutely have to then use a scotch lock, but if you can solder then it's a lot better.

Dam i was hoping there was away around them.
